GERMANY’S STEINMEIER RECEIVES POLISH PRESIDENT DUDA IN BERLIN – Opinion polls suggest that the race between Trzaskowski and Nawrocki remains close
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier received Poland’s outgoing President Andrzej Duda with military honours in Berlin.
Duda’s visit to Bellevue Palace is likely to be one of his last official foreign visits as president, as Poland will be going to the polls for the second round of presidential elections on June 1.
Polish voters will choose between Rafal Trzaskowski, the liberal mayor of Warsaw and ally of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and Karol Nawrocki, who, like Duda, is aligned with the national-conservative Law and Justice party (PiS).
Trzaskowski narrowly led Nawrocki in the first round, by 31.4% to 29.5%, a much narrower gap than opinion polls had suggested.
Opinion polls suggest that the race between Trzaskowski and Nawrocki remains close ahead of the presidential runoff.
