MOURINHO DEFEATED – Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Benfica resulted in a losing return to Stamford Bridge for the manager
It was a warm welcome but a disappointing return to Stamford Bridge for Jose Mourinho, as his Benfica side fell 1–0 to Chelsea in the Champions League.
The match was decided early, when Chelsea’s Pedro Neto found Alejandro Garnacho at the far post—his cross turned into the net by Benfica’s Richard Rios for an own goal in the 18th minute.
Mourinho, who won three league titles across two spells at Chelsea, was cheered by home fans who sang his name—contrasting with previous hostile visits in charge of Manchester United and Tottenham.
Despite late drama with seven yellow cards and a red for Chelsea’s Joao Pedro in stoppage time, Enzo Maresca’s side held on to secure their first points of the campaign.
Benfica created chances, but Mourinho’s new team remains winless in the Champions League, continuing a poor record against the London club.
