SOLAR ECLIPSE EVENT WATCHED FROM LONDON – Skies darken over London’s Tower Bridge during solar eclipse
Skies darkened over London, and revellers donned specially adapted glasses, as the UK capital witnessed a partial solar eclipse.
Local media reported that, for most of England, the moon covered more than 90% of the sun.
Other areas of Western Europe witnessed their first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Millions of people gathered in Iceland and northern Spain, with Spanish officials warning people to avoid areas where a heatwave has raised the risk of wildfires.
Authorities were expecting up to 6 million visitors in mostly rural areas within the eclipse’s path across northern Spain and the Balearic Islands, said Juan Cruz, Spain’s Secretary of State for Science. In Spain, the eclipse was quickly followed by the sunset, making the event particularly alluring.
