RESIDENT DOCTORS STRIKE OVER PAY DISPUTE – Doctors demand 26% pay restoration
Thousands of resident doctors in England walked out today, launching their 13th strike since March 2023. The action runs until Tuesday, with NHS leaders warning of major disruption to staffing, appointments and operations.
The government has refused any further pay offers, but the British Medical Association says years of pay erosion have left resident doctors far behind, calling for a 26% rise to restore earnings to 2008 levels.
BMA chair Dr. Tom Dolphin said some doctors were earning as little as £14 an hour when the dispute began, and despite recent increases, pay still hasn’t recovered. He added that even the health secretary once called restoration “a journey,” but said, “we haven’t seen the next steps.”
The latest strike adds further pressure to an NHS already struggling with shortages and record waiting lists.
