BURNHAM ADDRESSES UN ASSEMBLY – PM warns AI could outpace safeguards and increase national security risks
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has told the United Nations that Britain is ready to lead international efforts to establish global standards for artificial intelligence.
In his first address to the UN General Assembly, Burnham warned that AI could outpace existing safeguards and become a multiplier of national security risks. He said fundamental decisions about the technology should be taken by elected governments, rather than left to technology companies.
Burnham also accused Russian agencies of using bots, fake websites and fabricated content to spread disinformation and interfere with elections. Russia has rejected the allegations. He announced plans for a new National Centre for Information Defence to detect and disrupt hostile state information attacks.
The Prime Minister said Britain would put AI at the heart of its G20 presidency next year, working towards a single set of global principles and standards to improve transparency and safety. The UK has also announced a new AI defence partnership with the United States to help protect critical national infrastructure
