PM SAYS RUSSIA MEDDLED IN BREXIT VOTE – Burnham claims Moscow interfered in 2016 referendum but offers no evidence publicly
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said Russia interfered in Britain’s 2016 Brexit referendum, warning that Moscow is also trying to influence politics in other European democracies.
Speaking on a podcast, Burnham said he had received a clear answer from officials that Russian interference had taken place. However, he did not explain how the interference occurred or disclose the evidence behind his claim. Burnham urged voters in France and Germany to be alert to what he described as Russian efforts to disrupt their political systems. The Russian embassy in London has not yet responded, while Moscow has previously denied interfering in the Brexit vote.
However, Nigel Farage has branded Andy Burnham a “liar” after furiously rubbishing the Prime Minister’s bombshell claim that Russia influenced the Brexit referendum.
He added: “There was no Russian interference, and the Russia hoax has run all the way through this. And I particularly have to mention my friend and supporter Aaron Banks, who was severely libelled over this, but in the end, I’m pleased to say, won in the High Court. “This is Burnham. This is an out-of-touch, out-of-date Andy Burnham, with all sorts of bizarre ideas.”
A UK parliamentary intelligence committee said in 2020 that the government had failed to establish whether Russia meddled in the referendum. The same report found that Russia had sought to influence Scotland’s 2014 independence referendum.
