12 MIGRANTS DIE OFF GREEK ISLANDS – Survivors brought ashore after deadly crossing near Samos and Lesbos
Twelve migrants, including a baby, have died in two separate incidents off the Greek islands of Lesbos and Samos in the Aegean Sea.
Greek authorities say six people died near Lesbos when a speedboat carrying migrants collided with a coastguard vessel during a pursuit and overturned. Eight survivors were rescued and taken to hospital.
In a separate incident near Samos, another six migrants died when their boat capsized. Fourteen people were rescued, while search operations continued amid concerns that others could still be missing.
Two survivors, a Turkish national and an Iranian national, were arrested on suspicion of involvement in migrant smuggling.
The incidents highlight the continuing dangers faced by people attempting to reach Europe by sea from the Turkish coast. Greek authorities have called for action against smuggling networks, while investigations into both incidents continue.
