Britain will face further travel disruption this month after 20,000 rail workers prepare for three days of strikes in their long-running dispute over pay. Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) will once again walk out at 14 train operators across England, after the companies failed to make revised pay offer. A couple of the UK’s biggest banks have this morning announced some increases in savings rates – possibly hoping this will help their case in front of the FCA today. HSBC said it would be increasing returns on fixed-rate accounts and Isas, and offered a reminder that last week it increased interest on some instant access accounts. It also said it continued to “proactively nudge its savers to review their account and highlighting other saving options within the bank which might provide greater returns for them” – essentially putting the onus on them to move within the bank. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has issued new instructions for how military personnel and contractors are allowed to handle classified information after sensitive military planning documents were recently leaked online. On Friday, Mr. Austin issued a memo (pdf) providing military components, supporting agencies, and contractors with new instructions for how to handle classified national security information (CNSI). Among the changes Mr. Austin ordered were for the heads of various Department of Defense (DoD) components to ensure all their personnel with access to classified information are properly documented and that various security protocols are being followed. A High Street bank has blocked a gender-critical parents group from opening a new account amid a row over its political views. Metro Bank refused to open a new business account for Our Duty, a group of more than 2,000 parents who believe that it is harmful for transgender children to undergo a medical transition. The group’s founder, Keith Jordan, claimed that a manager told the group it could not open a business account because “the content of your website conflicts with the culture and ideas we are pushing”. A federal judge has made a historic ruling by partially granting an injunction that blocks various Biden administration officials and government agencies such as the Justice Department and the FBI from working with big tech firms to censor posts on social media. The injunction came in response to a censorship-by-proxy lawsuit brought by attorneys general in Louisiana and Missouri, who have accused Biden administration officials and various government agencies of pressuring social media companies to suspend accounts or take down posts.
