The first Westminster byelection since the resignation of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss and the financial fallout from the mini-budget takes place on Thursday. Polls will close at 10pm in the City of Chester constituency in the first electoral test for Rishi Sunak. The byelection was triggered by Labour MP Chris Matheson resigning in October after allegations of sexual misconduct. Parliament’s bullying and harassment watchdog and the standards commissioner found he had violated the Commons’ sexual misconduct policy. The byelection comes after a year of turmoil for the Conservatives, including byelection losses in Wakefield and Tiverton and Honiton in June and the Partygate scandal,…
As Lionel Messi zigzagged this way and that it sometimes seemed that Argentina’s No 10 must be electrically powered and perhaps operated by remote control. Although Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister scored the vital breakthrough goal for Lionel Scaloni’s side, it was Messi’s dedication to, in equal measure, bewitching his adoring public and bewildering Poland that really made the difference. Well before the end everyone had, almost, forgotten that a player who is such a catalyst for his country and who spent much of the game slaloming past often helpless markers had missed a first-half penalty. When the music stopped and the final…
Chinese police have started targeting participants of last weekend’s mass protests against the communist regime’s harsh COVID-19 policies, according to reports, suggesting the surveillance state is kicking into full gear in response to the country’s biggest display of civil disobedience in decades. Two protesters told Reuters that callers identifying themselves as Beijing police officers asked them to report to a police station on Tuesday with written accounts of their activities on Sunday night. A student also said they were asked by their college if they had been in an area where a protest happened and to provide a written account. “We are…
Marcus Rashford kneeled down, closed his eyes and pointed his fingers to the sky. At one of the finest moments of his career, the England forward wanted to pay his respects to a friend he has just lost to cancer. The emotions raged. Rashford had finally made the breakthrough, lancing the tension that had built during a tepid first half against an ultra-defensive Wales, and it was some way to do so – a fizzing free-kick that veered away from the goalkeeper, Danny Ward, and headed towards the top corner. England felt the shackles come off. Previously, it had been a slog; a…
PHOENIX, Ariz.—The consensus among the nearly 200 voters waiting in the cold outside the Maricopa Board of Supervisors conference center in Phoenix on Nov. 28 was that the midterm general election was, at best, a “mess.” “I’m here because the Constitution is not being upheld,” said Leslie Shepherd of Arizona. As a poll worker and registered Independent, Shepherd said she saw many frustrated voters who couldn’t immediately cast their ballot on election day. Shepherd then stood atop a cement wall waving a flag and a sign demanding the board set a new election date. She called upon those who came to…
Elon Musk on Monday claimed that Apple Inc. is “threatening to withhold Twitter” from its App Store and implied the big tech giant hates “free speech.” “Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. Do they hate free speech in America?” he asked. “Apple has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store,” Musk wrote, “but won’t tell us why.” Musk also asked CEO Tim Cook in a post: “What’s going on?” Musk’s comments about the iPhone maker come following several events that have led to speculation that Apple or Google would potentially block Twitter from their app stores. The head of Apple’s App Store…
The operators of Great Britain’s local energy networks will be forced to spend more of their profits on investing to future-proof the country’s electricity grid, after the regulator, Ofgem, said it would not allow any rises in household bills. In a new set of price controls that will run from 2023 to 2028, the energy watchdog said it would keep costs to customers unchanged at about £100 a year. Ofgem also said companies would still have to invest heavily in the British electricity system to ensure they were ready for the added demand expected as more homes and businesses opted…
A second half brace from Bruno Fernandes sent Portugal through to the last 16 of the World Cup to join France and Brazil after a 2-0 win over a lacklustre Uruguay. Fernandes scored with a cross intended for Cristiano Ronaldo that sailed fortuitously into the net on 54 minutes and converted a spot kick in stoppage time to put his side into the knockout stages with a match remaining. Portugal had the lion’s share of the possession and dominated for most of the Group H match, but struggled to create clear-cut chances until the second half in a game where…
England manager Gareth Southgate knows Wales will have “additional motivation” when the two sides clash in their final Group B game at the World Cup at 7pm tonight. The Ahmed bin Ali Stadium has been eagerly-awaited on both sides of the border and a derby atmosphere is guaranteed for the evening kickoff. England, who have not tasted defeat by the Welsh since 1984 and who have won the last six meetings, have all but qualified for the last 16 barring a four-goal defeat. For Wales, their hopes of progression are hanging by a thread with their destiny far from in…
The airline tells investors it tends to do well in tougher economic times as it pays a price for post-pandemic struggles which took the gloss off a strong summer performance. EasyJet says it is expecting to build on a strong summer, despite pressures on consumer budgets, after COVID and post-pandemic disruption pushed it to an annual loss. The no-frills carrier reported a headline loss before tax of £178m for the 12 months to 30 September. While that sum was well down on the previous financial year’s loss of £1.14bn, it reflected the company’s difficulties in getting back up to speed…
