Boris Johnson has refused to rule out the introduction of a windfall tax which would help to relieve pressure on the cost of living crisis. Speaking to LBC’s Nick Ferrari, Johnson said that while he believed a disadvantage of windfall tax would be the impact it would have on investment, the prospect of such a tax was still something to be looked at. Johnson said: “The disadvantage with those sorts of taxes is that they deter investment in the very things that they need to be investing in – new technology, in new energy supply.” When asked by Ferrari whether he would…

Liz Truss has been warned of a major rebellion over plans for a bill that could revoke parts of the Northern Ireland protocol, amid fresh concern in Washington over the UK’s approach. European Union insiders have warned that the British government’s threat to abandon parts of the Northern Ireland protocol risks undermining the international alliance against Vladimir Putin. Officials in Brussels were “flabbergasted” at the timing of an intervention from the UK foreign secretary, who issued a statement on Tuesday night saying she would “not shy away” from taking unilateral action on the protocol. The bill, which is expected to be discussed by…

Undisclosed royalty payments estimated at $350 million from pharmaceutical and other firms to Dr. Anthony Fauci and hundreds of National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists do present “an appearance of a conflict of interest,” according to the agency’s acting director. Dr. Lawrence Tabak, who took over as NIH director following the December 2021 resignation of the agency’s long-time leader, Dr. Francis Collins, told a House Appropriations Committee subcommittee that federal law allows the royalty payments, but he conceded that they don’t look ethical. “Right now, I think the NIH has a credibility problem and this only feeds into this, and…

The number of people waiting for hospital treatment in England reached another record high in March. A total of 6.4 million patients were awaiting treatment that month – a 3% increase on the 6.2 million in February. One in 20 people are waiting more than a year for treatment, with 306,286 waiting in March, an increase on the previous month’s 299,478. The number of people waiting more than two years fell from its January high, 23,778, to below 17,000 in April. An NHS spokesperson said the record waiting list was partly down to the fact “increasing numbers of people are coming forward following the pandemic…

Pep Guardiola said Kevin De Bruyne is reaping the rewards of adding a selfish streak to his game after his four-goal haul propelled Manchester City to within touching distance of a fourth Premier League title in five seasons. Guardiola’s side destroyed Wolves 5-1 to restore their three-point advantage over Liverpool with two games to play and the City manager admitted that the marquee signing of Erling Haaland will only help them to increase their goals tally. Raheem Sterling registered City’s fifth six minutes from time and De Bruyne hit the post with a minute to spare. “I’m so disappointed with him because he…

More than 250,000 households will “slide into destitution” next year, taking the total number in extreme poverty to around 1.2m, unless the government acts to help the poorest families hit by the energy price shock, according to the National Institute for Economic & Social Research (NIESR). More than 1.5m households will see the rise in food and energy bills outstrip their disposable income, forcing them to rely on savings or extra borrowing to make up the shortfall, said the thinktank, which blamed welfare spending cuts since the Brexit vote in 2016 for leaving millions of families in a vulnerable financial position.…

The government’s proposed ban on conversion practices intended to change people’s sexuality will in fact only fully cover under-18s, Downing Street has confirmed, saying it had to “strike the right balance” on outlawing the much-condemned practice. In a move that appeared at odds with earlier talk of a ban, although officials noted the idea had appeared in consultation documents, No 10 said adults in England and Wales who consented to sexuality conversion for religious or personal reasons would be allowed to do so. This is expected to be permitted only if “this does not cause serious harm”, officials said, with…

Michael Gove has warned the EU that “no option is off the table”, including ignoring parts of the Northern Ireland protocol, after the UK argued the solution put forward by Brussels last October would worsen food shortages. Gove, a senior cabinet minister, said it would not amount to tearing up the protocol but he left open the possibility that the UK could pass legislation to disapply parts of the controversial framework. Talks between the UK and EU are at a standstill over the protocol, which aligns Northern Ireland more closely on regulations and trade with the EU than the rest of the UK –…

Elon Musk on Tuesday suggested he would lift Twitter’s ban on former President Donald Trump after closing a deal to purchase Twitter and take it private. Musk, who is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, said it was a mistake for Twitter to suspend the former president’s account in early 2021. When asked point-blank virtually during a Future of the Car event hosted by the Financial Times allowing Trump back on the social media platform, Musk described Trump’s ban as morally wrong and “flat-out stupid.” “So I guess the answer is … I would reverse the perma-ban” on Trump’s account, Musk said, cautioning that he “[doesn’t] own Twitter…

Jürgen Klopp said he had invited his Liverpool players to follow his lead in shutting out the noise surrounding their title scrap with Manchester City and insists his team are “still chasing like mad” after returning to winning ways at Aston Villa. Sadio Mané’s clever winner cut City’s advantage to just goal difference before they visit Wolves on Wednesday, and Klopp conceded the leaders had signed a “beast” in Erling Haaland. Asked how easy it is for Liverpool not to concern themselves about City, Klopp replied: “For me it is absolutely no problem. I have invited the boys to follow my mindset.…
