A damning report into hundreds of baby deaths has condemned the trust at the centre of the biggest maternity scandal in the history of the NHS for blaming mothers while repeatedly ignoring its own catastrophic blunders for decades. The independent inquiry into maternity practices at Shrewsbury and Telford hospital NHS trust uncovered hundreds of cases in which health officials failed to undertake serious incident investigations, while deaths were dismissed or not investigated appropriately. Instead, grieving families were denied access to reviews of their care and mothers were blamed when their babies died or suffered horrific injuries. A combination of an obsession with…
The £38m yacht, named Phi, is owned by an unnamed Russian businessman, but the government said its ownership is “deliberately well hidden”. Transport secretary Grant Shapps said the move was “a clear and stark warning to Putin and his cronies”. The UK has already introduced a raft of sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Phi was first identified as being potentially Russian-owned on 13 March, the government said. It added that the company the ship is registered to is based in the islands of St Kitts and Nevis but it carried Maltese flags to hide its origins. The…
Grocery price inflation in the UK has hit its highest level in 10 years, data company Kantar has revealed. The cost of groceries is now 5.2 percent higher than it was a year ago, and the price inflation over the latest four weeks is the highest since April 2012, according to the latest data. As a result, “more and more we’re going to see consumers and retailers take action to manage the growing cost of grocery baskets,” said Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insights at Kantar. Consumers are increasingly turning to cheaper products and supermarket own-brand labels, and more and more people…
Police today announced they are preparing to hand out an initial batch of 20 fines for Partygate – but Boris Johnson is unlikely to be among them. Scotland Yard said it is referring penalty notices to be issued to people who attended lockdown-busting Whitehall drinks – confirming it believes the law was broken in some instances. However, a statement made clear that the individuals will not be named, and also crucially ruled out saying which events they attended. The force is thought to be focusing on ‘clear-cut’ cases where people are not contesting allegations. The PM is said to have been at six…
Boris Johnson joined senior politicians from across the House of Commons as they came together to remember Prince Philip today. The Prime Minister was driven the short trip from Downing Street to Westminster Abbey in his work Range Rover ahead of the congregation. He joined a raft of colleagues including Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Home Secretary Priti Patel and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on the front row in the iconic venue. Behind them sat opposition figures including Nicola Sturgeon, Mark Drakeford, Ian Blackford and Sir Ed Davey, as well as top civil servant Simon Case. And a row back from them were military…

There is nothing obscure about the threat posed by Ivory Coast but their visit to Wembley still feels curiously like a break from routine. England have not faced an opponent from outside Europe since November 2018, when the USA were seen off in a friendly; this will be the first and last chance to give preparations for Qatar 2022 a cross-continental flavour. In the seven months leading up to the last World Cup England were able to face Brazil and then, once the draw was known, schedule friendlies in early June against Nigeria and Costa Rica. The theory is traditionally that it pays to…
Almost four decades after their only appearance at a men’s World Cup, Canada are back, becoming the first North American nation to secure passage to Qatar 2022. In the most fitting style and circumstances John Herdman’s side, who have surprised first their own country and then Concacaf, qualified with an emphatic 4-0 win over Jamaica at a raucous BMO Field in Toronto. The team sent thousands in the stadium – and millions more across the country – into delight. The circumstances were fitting because the weather gods of the great white north scoffed at the idea of spring and sent freezing…
AS LONDON’s Mayor this week issued a ‘high pollution’ warning, many feel his aim is to rid the capital of all cars. Sadiq Khan took the step of announcing a ‘toxic air’ warning for the first time in two years last week and pleaded with millions in the city to avoid making ‘unnecessary car trips’. The announcement came just a few days after the mayor was accused by LBC radio’s Andrew Marr of “trying to drive car drivers out of London”. It’s also just a couple of weeks since Mr Khan announced plans to expand the Ultra Low Emission Zone…
Heart abnormalities were detected in some adolescents months after COVID-19 vaccination, according to a study. Researchers at Seattle Children’s Hospital reviewed cases of patients younger than 18 who went to the hospital with chest pain and elevated serum troponin levels, two key markers of heart inflammation, within a week of getting a second dose of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. While 35 patients fit the criteria, 19 were excluded for various reasons, including receiving care in another state after the initial visit. Cardiac imaging of the remaining 16 patients, performed three to eight months after they were first examined, showed 11 had persistent late gadolinium…
