Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has agreed to a $90 million settlement over a decade-old lawsuit which accused the social media platform of tracking users’ internet activity through browser plug-ins, even after they logged out of their accounts. A judge must now approve the settlement between Meta and the plaintiffs which was filed on Monday night with the U.S. District Court in San Jose, California. Under the terms of the proposed settlement, the social media company must also delete all data collected without users’ knowledge. Meta must also pay $90 million to users who filed a claim. The lawsuit, filed in 2012, stems from a 2010 update by…
Matt Hancock broke the law by appointing two insiders to senior posts in the government’s Covid response without proper competition, the High Court ruled today. Two judges ruled that former health secretary Matt Hancock did not comply with the public sector equality duty when appointing Conservative peer Baroness Dido Harding and Mike Coupe, a former Sainsbury’s colleague of Baroness Harding, to posts in 2020. The duty prevents ministers from favouring friends, relatives or associates while making appointments because of the harm this can cause to less well connected candidates, including ethnic minority and disabled people. Judges concluded that Mr Hancock had breached…
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been accused of bringing ‘martial law’ to Canada as he invoked the rarely-used Emergencies Act on Monday to bolster police presence across the country to crack down on Freedom Convoy protesters. Under the Emergencies Act, the government introduced measures intended to cut off protesters’ funding and took steps to reinforce provincial and local law enforcement with federal police. Fox News host Tucker Carlson was among commentators saying Trudeau had gone too far Monday, during a slot with on-screen graphics saying: ‘Trudeau’s new move sounds like martial law.’ ‘Canada became a dictatorship today. It actually did,’ Carlson said on his…
Pep Guardiola says harmony at Manchester City is exceptional but insisted he will not be the manager for as long as Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge of Manchester United. Guardiola is in his sixth year at City, a tenure that has so far been supremely successful. While his opening season was trophyless, the 50-year-old has since led City to three Premier League titles, the FA Cup, four successive League Cups and last season’s Champions League final. City’s first domestic crown was claimed with a record 100 points and, if Guardiola’s side defend the title this year – they lead Liverpool, who have played…
OTTAWA—Freedom Convoy organizers say they will continue to protest on Parliament Hill despite the federal government’s declaration of a state of emergency. “We are not afraid. In fact, every time the government decides to further suspend our civil liberties, our resolve strengthens and the importance of our mission becomes clearer,” organizer Tamara Lich said on Feb. 14 in anticipation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoking the Emergencies Act over the protests demanding an end to COVID-19 mandates. “We will remain peaceful, but planted on Parliament Hill until the mandates are decisively ended. We recognize that there is a democratic process…
A former clinical trial overseer for a contractor holding trials of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine is pressing forward with a lawsuit against Pfizer and her former company despite the U.S. government declining to side with her. Brook Jackson was fired by the contractor, Ventavia Research Group, in 2020. She came forward as a whistleblower in 2021. Jackson filed a False Claims Act suit against Pfizer, Ventavia, and another company involved in the trial, ICON. It has been under seal for over a year, but is now public after the U.S. Department of Justice declined to intervene on behalf of Jackson. Government lawyers did not explain…
Boris Johnson plans to hold further talks with world leaders as they work to bring Russia “back from the brink” of war with Ukraine as the crisis enters a “critical juncture”. The prime minister will continue with diplomatic efforts this week despite No 10 assessing that all information suggests Moscow could be planning an invasion “at any moment”. He is understood to be receiving daily intelligence briefings from security chiefs on the increasing buildup of Russian forces and will travel to Europe towards the end of the week. No 10 did not set out which world leaders Johnson was hoping to…
Trudeau Refuses To Meet With Truckers While Conservatives, Liberals In Parliament Call Out Hypocrisy
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is demanding protesters go home as three border crossings are now blocked and supporters continue to flock to Parliament to join the Freedom Convoy. Ottawa Police threatened to physically remove protesters on Thursday even as all tow truck operators are refusing to move any vehicles connected with the convoy, saying they stand with the truckers. There have also been threats of mass arrests and criminal charges. Meanwhile, conservatives in Parliament introduced a motion to move toward ending mandates. All the while, Trudeau blamed truckers for problems actually caused by vaccine mandates and COVID restrictions. He…
Dozens of Republicans are calling on the White House to give Joe Biden a cognitive test. On Tuesday, 38 Republicans sent a letter to Biden to follow in 45th President Donald Trump’s footsteps and take a neurophysiological test. The letter said they believe regardless of age, gender or political party, all presidents should take a test to document and demonstrate sound mental abilities. Former White House chief medical advisor, Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) said Biden is not in his right mind to sit in the Oval Office. He insisted the test would reassure Americans their Commander-in-Chief is fit for making…
OTTAWA, Ontario—The center of Canada’s capital city was flooded on Feb. 12 by thousands of protesters demanding an end to the country’s COVID-19 mandates and restrictions. Many more joined the ongoing trucker-led protest in Ottawa with the arrival of the weekend. Its numbers grew from the night of Feb. 11 into the next morning, as supporters seemingly poured into the city. Greater masses of people were particularly noticeable on Parliament Hill and then later on the streets, where they spilled out from the immediate vicinity of the truck blockade. At about 10 a.m., several thousand protesters were marshaled into groups to form the word “freedom.”…
