Amazon (AMZN.O) will on Thursday seek to overturn an EU order to repay about 250 million euros ($277 million) in back taxes to Luxembourg at Europe’s second-highest court, one of a series of high-profile cases marking the bloc’s crackdown on unfair tax deals. The European Commission said in its 2017 ruling that the tax deal, which covered the period from May 2006 to June 2014, meant almost three-quarters of Amazon’s business went untaxed. The EU competition watchdog said the Grand Duchy allowed the U.S. online retailer to shift a significant portion of its profits from a subsidiary to a holding…
Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) reported its lowest monthly global sales in a decade in February as the coronavirus outbreak hurt demand, in what is the first major indicator of damage to the broader auto sector from the epidemic. It turned in a preliminary sales figure of 275,044 vehicles for the month, 13% below 315,820 vehicles sold a year earlier. Hyundai last reported sales lower than this in February 2010. South Korea’s Hyundai, which with affiliate Kia Motors (000270.KS) is the world’s No.5 car maker, is the first major automaker to announce sales for the month. Chinese and U.S. players will turn…
Australia’s deportation policy is so “corrosive” that it has soured its bilateral relationship with New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, a rare bust-up between the two historic allies. Australia’s conservative government has in recent months moved to deport thousands of foreigners convicted of crimes as part of an immigration crack-down that can also strip dual-nationals of their Australian citizenship. The move has seen hundreds of people deported from Australia to New Zealand, a country that some left when just children and have few ties to. The two countries have fought in numerous conflicts alongside each other, and squabbles between…
Spanish startup company Prometeo tested their AI-based monitoring device on firefighters for the first time in February, during a prescribed burn in a forest near Olivella in Spain’s northwestern region of Catalonia. The technology uses artificial intelligence and the internet of things to help keep firefighters safe using a device the size of a smartphone strapped to their uniforms. Ten firefighters volunteered to test the device during a controlled wildfire. The device has sensors that monitor temperature, smoke concentration and humidity in real-time, and can send colour-coded alerts via a Cloud platform to command centres. That information can then be…
Pete Buttigieg dropped out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, saying he no longer saw a change of winning, the day after fellow moderate Joe Biden won a big victory in South Carolina. The move shook up the Democratic contest to pick a candidate to take on Republican President Donald Trump in November’s election and came two days before the 14-state Super Tuesday nominating contests that will offer the biggest electoral prize so far. Buttigieg, a 38-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who gained early momentum after he narrowly won the Iowa caucuses last month and finished…
Thunderous shouts of rejoicing by the global congregation, met the declaration of March to be ‘the Month of Knowledge’ by Pastor Chris at the just concluded Global Communion Service. Shedding more light on the Word of the Month, Pastor Chris charged the congregation saying, “this month, give attention to knowledge; God is saying, choose knowledge over gold.” Reading from Exodus 31:1-5, Isaiah 11:1-3, and Daniel 12:1-4, Pastor Chris explained that God is set to increase knowledge in these last days through the Spirit of Knowledge. He further clarified that every child of God has received the Holy Spirit, and consequently…
The planned expansion of London’s Heathrow Airport was declared unlawful on environmental grounds by a court on Thursday, a ruling that could sink the $18 billion project that has been dogged by decades of dispute and indecision. In a victory for climate change campaigners, an appeal court judge said that a failure to take into account the government’s commitments on climate change was “legally fatal” to the plans to build a third runway at Europe’s busiest airport. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been a vociferous opponent of the expansion, which was approved under the previous government. During last year’s election…
Britain’s future relationship with the European Union was likely top of the agenda as Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz to Downing Street. Thirty-three-year-old Kurz – the world’s youngest head of government – traveled to London less than a month after Britain sealed its departure from the EU, but with negotiations on their future relationship set to start on Monday (March 2). A spokesperson for Johnson confirmed earlier on Tuesday that senior British ministers have come to an agreement on the government’s negotiating mandate for the talks. European Union member states likewise said they had adopted a…
British exports to the European Union could fall by as much as 14% if the two sides are unable to strike a free trade agreement and, even with one, could be 9% lower, the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), said. The imposition of tariffs under a no-deal scenario would crimp trade, with the effect amplified by so-called “non-tariff measures” (NTMs) such as quotas, licensing and regulatory measures protecting health, safety and the environment. NTMs would double the negative impact of tariffs and could lead to an overall $32 billion hit to British exports, according to the UN Conference…
Several European countries have announced their first coronavirus cases, with all appearing to be linked to the growing outbreak in Italy. Austria, Croatia and Switzerland said the cases involved people who had been to Italy, as did Algeria in Africa. The first positive virus test has been recorded in Latin America – a Brazilian resident just returned from Italy. Italy has in recent days become Europe’s worst-affected country, with more than 300 cases and 11 deaths. But its neighbours have decided closing borders would be “disproportionate”. Health ministers from France, Germany, Italy and the EU Commission committed to keeping frontiers…
