President Donald Trump’s tax returns will never be handed over to Democratic lawmakers, White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said on Sunday, defying an effort in Congress to learn more about the real estate mogul’s personal finances. An attorney for Trump on Friday blasted House Democrats’ request for six years of Trump’s personal and business returns as “a misguided attempt” to politicize the tax laws, accusing lawmakers of harassment and interference in IRS audits. One of many investigations targeting Trump on Capitol Hill and in the U.S. court system, the House Democrats’ probe into the president’s tax returns could…
British Prime Minister Theresa May said in a video statement released on Sunday, that her Conservative government and opposition Labour party must compromise to win support in parliament for leaving the European Union with a deal, just days before the latest Brexit date on Friday 12 April. PM May, her Brexit deal rejected by parliament three times, has been forced to turn to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn after giving up on winning over eurosceptics in her Conservative Party, whose opposition has hardened. With Britain’s departure now set for April 12, PM May’s government is running out of time to get…
In yet another twist to the BREXIT story. Another ministerial resignation. Conservative lawmaker Nigel Adams resigned from his position as Junior Minister for Wales and as a government whip. The men and women are responsible to enforce the government’s policy on their MPs. In his resignation letter, he described Jeremy Corbyn as a “Marxist who has never once in his political life, put British interests first”, adding, that he profoundly disagreed with the prime minister’s decision. The PM has sent a letter to all of her parties MPs, explaining the need to approach the opposition benches for support for her…
Brexit minister Stephen Barclay said that Britain’s Conservative government would accept parliament’s choosing a so-called ‘soft’ Brexit after failing to secure backing for Prime Minister Theresa May’s deal. Prime Minister May will meet opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn later on Wednesday to thrash out a Brexit compromise, a gamble that could finally see a European Union Withdrawal deal agreed but also tear the Conservative party apart. After her EU withdrawal deal was rejected three times by lawmakers, with parliament and her Conservative Party hopelessly divided over Brexit, the PM said, she would reach out to Corbyn in a bid to break…
Arsenal beat Newcastle at Emirates Stadium to move above Manchester United and north London rivals Tottenham and go third in the Premier League. Aaron Ramsey, who had an earlier effort disallowed following a foul, put the hosts ahead with a fine low strike from 15 yards out. Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie produced a diving header on the goal-line to deny Alexandre Lacazette, but the Frenchman doubled Arsenal’s lead late on when he calmly lofted the ball over goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Arsenal were 10 points behind Tottenham at the start of February but this victory took the Gunners two points clear of…
Ryanair has become the only airline to be included in a list of Europe’s top 10 polluters, according to data from the EU’s Transport & Environment group. It is the first time a company that does not run a coal-fired power plant has come near the top of the ranking. Seven plants in Germany and one in both Poland and Bulgaria were on the list. The data said Ryanair’s carbon dioxide emissions rose by 6.9% last year, but the firm said it was “Europe’s greenest and cleanest airline”. In a statement, the carrier added that “passengers travelling on Ryanair have…
As newspapers rolled off the printing press plant in the early hours of Tuesday, Britain was no nearer to resolving the chaos surrounding its departure from the European Union. After a tumultuous week in which May’s divorce strategy was rejected by lawmakers for a third time, despite her offer to quit if it passed, the future direction of Brexit remains mired in confusion. In a bid to break the impasse, MPs on Monday, voted on four last-minute alternative Brexit options Options for a Customs Union and were defeated. The option that came closest to getting a majority was a proposal…
MPs are demanding the competition watchdog break up the ‘big four’ accountancy firms to improve confidence in top company audits following the failures of Carillion and BHS. A report by the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Committee argues for the “full structural break-up” of KPMG, Deloitte, PwC, and EY into audit and separate consultancy businesses. The MPs said such a move would be more effective in tackling conflicts of interest and providing the “professional scepticism” needed to deliver high-quality audits. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is to shortly deliver its final report on the issue. Its initial proposals…
Migrants jumped border fences from the Mexican cities of Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, to turn themselves in to U.S. border patrol officials, hopeful that the move may hasten their applications for asylum. The U.S. government says it is struggling to deal with a surge of asylum seekers from countries in Central America who travel through Mexico. On Saturday, the US cut aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras in response – a move Democrats warned would only worsen the situation. Under former President Barack Obama a system dubbed “metering” began, which limits how many can ask for asylum each day…
Outside, pro- and anti-EU protesters with flags and placards took up well-worn positions on nearby pavements and squares, their rivalry and modest numbers reflecting how Brexit has both divided and exhausted the nation. Some politicians complained that the atmosphere outside parliament had become ugly and intimidating. But on Thursday at least, protesters were subdued and few. Today could be different. This is really the last day and the last hour for the PMs Withdrawal Deal. It could be Britain’s finest hour or one of its Worst.
