Theresa May has said Britain can “set an example to the world” in the Brexit negotiations, as she reiterated her call to “get on with” the talks. Facing MPs in the Commons, the Prime Minister said that while there would be “ups and downs” on the horizon, the Government would pay no heed to the “counsels of despair that this simply cannot be done”. But the spectre of perhaps the thorniest issue in the negotiations – the future status of the Northern Ireland border – has reared its head once more. Mrs May’s disclosure that Britain is looking at the…
Energy suppliers are to be banned from back-billing customers for gas and electricity used more than 12 months ago under new rules from Ofgem. Such charges, on average totalling £1,160 but in extreme cases more than £10,000, can arise due to problems with a supplier’s billing systems or incorrect usage estimates, the regulator said. The new rules will come into effect in May for household consumers and in November for the smallest businesses. Suppliers would still be able to recoup the money beyond the 12-month period if customers have behaved unreasonably, such as by blocking access for meter readings. Rob…
Florida’s Republican-controlled Senate has taken tentative steps towards gun control following the recent high school massacre in the state. Lawmakers backed – by 20 votes to 18 – a three-day waiting period for any gun purchase and the raising of the legal purchase age to 21. A person in Florida already has to be 21 to buy a handgun but that restriction, if the laws are also accepted by the state’s House of Representatives, would extend to other guns such as rifles. The news comes just weeks after 14 students and three staff were shot dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas…
Homes and businesses affected are having to use bottled water while work continues to fix leaks and repair burst pipes following a thaw in temperatures after last week’s cold weather. In the Commons, Thames Water was criticised for failing to contact residents and tell them how they could collect bottles of water. Labour’s Chuka Umunna, who represents Streatham, said he was “astounded” at the lack of a Government statement on the issue, adding that “at the very least” there should be “some kind of public inquiry”. Raising a point of order, Mr Umunna said: “Over the last few years there…
The head of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has warned a trade war sparked by US President Donald Trump would plunge the world into “deep recession”. Roberto Azevedo used remarks in Geneva to appeal for calm, saying member states must stop “the fall of the first dominoes” – hours after the European Union said it was preparing a “decisive” response to plans that, Mr Trump hopes, will bolster US competitiveness. He prompted fury among major US trading partners worldwide last week when he announced proposals for 25% tariffs on steel products and 10% on aluminium. His administration has since made…
“Throughout this month, walk in boldness, walk in glory, walk in victory!” — Pastor Chris A super-charged sermon on the legal and vital realities of life in Christ preceded the declaration of the Word of the Spirit for March 2018, ‘the Month of Dominion’! Prior to the announcement of the word for the month, the BLW President, Reverend (Dr.) Chris Oyakhilome, said concerning the month, “our thinking is different, and we’re going to do mighty things!” Further explaining the inspiration of the Spirit, the man of God quoted the Lord Jesus saying prophetically, “you’re going to walk upon serpents and…
The United States has piled pressure on Russia to use its “influence” to secure a fully-fledged ceasefire in Syria’s rebel-held enclave of eastern Ghouta. US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert called for an “immediate end to offensive operations” in the region to allow aid workers to treat the wounded. “The regime claims it is fighting terrorists, but is instead terrorising hundreds of thousands of civilians with airstrikes, artillery, rockets, and a looming ground attack. The regime’s use of chlorine gas as a weapon only intensifies the misery of the civilian population,” she tweeted. “#Russia has the influence to stop these…
Business groups have broadly welcomed Jeremy Corbyn’s backing for a customs union with the EU after Brexit – but remain sceptical about the Labour leader’s wider agenda. The CBI said Mr Corbyn’s position put “jobs and living standards first”, though it remains troubled by the prospect of the nationalisation of key industries should Mr Corbyn enter Downing Street. Other private sector organisations also welcomed – with their own caveats – Mr Corbyn’s pledge to negotiate a “new and strong relationship with the single market that includes full tariff-free access”. The position outlined by the Labour leader piles pressure on Theresa…
Britain is bracing itself for heavy snow after the Met Office issued amber weather warnings – indicating a possible risk to life – for large swathes of the country. The alert has been raised for snow showers on Tuesday morning, covering the South East, northeastern England and the East Midlands. Forecasters predict up to 15cm (6in) of snow could fall in just a few hours with the warnings in place between 2am and 12pm. Drivers, commuters and those looking to catch planes are being warned they could face even more severe disruption on Tuesday morning as the freezing temperatures continue…
President Donald Trump has pledged to turn grief over the Florida school shooting into “action” to make sure it never happens again. Speaking during a meeting with state governors from across the country, Mr Trump said that he would be willing to stand up to the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA) over issues like tougher background checks. As teachers from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school returned to campus for the first time since 17 people were murdered on Valentine’s Day, he said there is “no bigger fan of the Second Amendment than me” but he wanted to be sure…
