House price growth looks set to grind to a halt next year as uncertainty, a lack of available homes and stretched budgets weigh on the market, according to surveyors. Figures from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) suggested that London would see a continuing trend of decline, spreading to the South East. However the RICS survey found that this would be balanced with growth in most other parts of the UK such as Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and northwest England, areas where prices have yet to recover to pre-financial crisis levels. The figures suggested that the annual rate of…

The Senate has approved the most sweeping overhaul of the US tax code in more than 30 years. Republicans cheered as the result of the 51-48 vote was announced. The bill now goes to the House for a further vote later on Wednesday, with approval expected. It would then go to President Donald Trump for his signature, enacting it into law. The sweeping, $1.5tr (£1.1tr) tax bill marks a victory for the Republican Party and is the first major legislative victory for Mr Trump, who had long said he wanted to reform the country’s tax system. Measures included in the…

The Prime Minister has claimed her Government is “proving the doubters wrong” after securing a deal in the first phase of Brexit negotiations. Theresa May said her Brexit plans will not be “derailed” as senior ministers prepare to consider the future shape of the UK’s relationship with the EU. She said talks would now begin on an “implementation period” immediately after the formal date of Brexit. But some Tory Eurosceptics have already warned they will not accept arrangements which resemble continued EU membership during the transition to a new relationship. Boris Johnson called for Mrs May to strike a deal…

“Spread the blessings of God,” Pastor Chris instructs as he announces prophetic word for December 2017. The last Global Communion Service in the Year of Flourishing was one to remember, exceeding all expectations, as the BLW President, Reverend (Dr.) Chris Oyakhilome, called saints around the world to blessing-consciousness in a month declared to be that of benedictions. A benediction, Pastor Chris explained, “is a prayer of blessing, usually not for yourself but for others.” This, he said, after reading several examples of benedictions released by the Apostle Paul unto saints in Thessalonica, Ephesus and Galatia, including the popular blessings declared…

Zimbabwe’s incoming leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has hailed a “new and unfolding democracy” after returning from exile to replace Robert Mugabe. He also vowed to create jobs in a country where some estimates say 90% of people are unemployed. “We want to grow our economy, we want peace, we want jobs, jobs, jobs,” he told a cheering crowd in Harare. Mr Mnangagwa, who fled to South Africa two weeks ago, is to be made the new president on Friday, state TV said. His dismissal led the ruling party and the military to intervene and force an end to Mr Mugabe’s 37-year…

It was a firefighting Budget, uncharacteristic of opening budgets of any parliament, designed to solve short-term political problems and give a nod towards a longer-term vision. We knew the Chancellor faced an unprecedented set of economic, fiscal, parliamentary and personal political constraints on what he was able to do. In the end, he let the fiscal numbers drift with a giveaway Budget, in order to fix the Government’s political problems with cash. Universal Credit was afforded £300m a year to reduce the waiting time for transferring recipients to five weeks rather than six, and deal with specific issues around housing…

Disputed Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and four of his former ministers have been released on conditional bail in Belgium after turning themselves in to face a Spanish warrant for their arrest. A Belgian judge ordered the five, who fled Spain earlier this week after being accused of rebellion and sedition, not to leave the country until their extradition case is heard. “The request made this afternoon by the Brussels’ Prosecutor’s Office for the provisional release of all persons sought has been granted by the investigative judge,” a statement by the prosecutor’s office said. “The next step in the proceedings is the…
