North Korea has been hit by a new set of United Nations sanctions following the country’s latest nuclear test on 3 September. The sanctions target gas and oil imports and ban textile exports from the secretive state, as well as limiting the number of foreign workers it can send abroad. The resolution imposes a ban on condensates and natural gas liquids, a cap of two million barrels a year on refined petroleum products, and a cap on crude oil exports to North Korea at current levels. China supplies most of North Korea’s crude. But consensus has come at a cost.…
“There’s an outpouring; there’s rain,” the BLW President says, declaring it spring time! The moment that multitudes around the world await at each Global Communion Service in the BLW Nation, came a short while ago as the man of God, Reverend (Dr.) Chris Oyakhilome, declared in the power of the Holy Spirit that it is spring time in the realm of the Spirit! Before proclaiming such propelling and prophetic words over the congregation, Pastor Chris issued three special instructions for the brethren to abide by. “Receive God’s Word as seed from the seed store; plant it,” the man of God…
Boots issued a legal warning to a pregnancy charity over its public campaign for more affordable emergency contraception, it has emerged. The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) revealed the high street chain accused it of encouraging “personal abuse” and “harassment” of top Boots executives. In a formal complaint issued on 1 August through law firm Schillings – often employed by celebrities – Boots alleged that BPAS helped cause “immense personal distress” to senior executives. It followed a row over Boots’ pricing of the morning-after pill, with the company apologising in July for its “poor choice of words” after it initially resisted…
The border wall between the US and its southern neighbour is a step closer after four companies were awarded contracts to build prototypes. One of the central promises of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign was to build a wall between his country and Mexico, vowing it would stop illegal immigration. The companies chosen will build reinforced concrete models up to 30ft (9m) high and about 30ft wide, which will be tested in San Diego. Among the requirements for the prototypes is an “anti climb” feature. The four companies are Caddell Construction Co of Montgomery, Alabama; Fisher Sand & Gravel Co of…
The EU chief Brexit negotiator has said there has been no “decisive progress” on key issues in talks with the UK, criticising the UK for demanding the “impossible”. Michel Barnier said the two sides are still “quite far” away from being in a position to begin talks on future trade arrangements – which the UK is hoping to begin next month. Mr Barnier was speaking alongside Brexit Secretary David Davis after a third round of talks in Brussels over Britain’s departure from the EU. He said there had been some fruitful discussions but struck a critical, pessimistic tone – at…
The Government’s bold offer of 30 hours a week free childcare has been described as “chaos” on the day it comes into force in England. The Pre-school Learning Alliance, which has 14,000 members, says a funding shortfall means nurseries across England are struggling make it work. Chief Executive Neil Leitch told Sky News: “The government’s total refusal to tackle, or even acknowledge, the fundamental problem of early years under funding has left providers across the country struggling to find ways of delivering the offer that won’t force them out of business.” “Every week we’re hearing of more and more childcare…
Liam Fox has accused Brussels of trying to “blackmail” the UK into agreeing a Brexit divorce bill. On a business delegation to Japan, the International Trade Secretary expressed frustration at the European Union’s insistence on agreeing a settlement before moving on to trade talks. He told Sky News: “I think there is frustration that we have not been able to get on that longer-term issue, that we’re stuck on this separation issue and we’re not able to get onto the issues that will matter in the longer term for the future prosperity of the UK and the people of Europe.”…
Teenagers across England will find out this morning how well they did in their GCSE exams. These will be the first results using a system of number grades instead of the familiar A* to G grades, following the biggest overhaul of the exam system in a generation. Under the new system, traditional A* to G grades have been replaced with a 9 to 1 system, with 9 the highest mark. The grade 7 is broadly equivalent to an A under the old system, while a 4 is broadly equivalent to a C. Three core subjects – maths, English language and English…
Tesco has opened its £85m compensation scheme for shareholders who lost money after being misled by the company’s overstatement of its profits three years ago. Around 10,000 retail investors are expected to qualify for an average pay-out of around £400 each under the scheme. Tesco announced the scheme, which is being administered by the accountancy and business services firm KPMG, in March this year as part of a settlement it reached with the Serious Fraud Office and the Financial Conduct Authority. The grocery giant stunned investors when, in September 2014, it admitted that it had overstated its profits by £263m following an…
The pound has hit a fresh eight-year low against the euro after the single currency was boosted by strong economic data while the UK still faces Brexit uncertainty. Sterling slipped close to €1.08 as it continued a recent slide which has taken it beyond previous post-referendum lows. It has not been as low since October 2009 when it came close to parity with the euro. The pound’s weakness will add to the expense for British holidaymakers currently on the continent, making meals, hotel stays and road tolls priced in euros more costly. It came as the single currency was boosted…
