London Mayor Sadiq Khan has waded into the row over police cuts, warning the Metropolitan Police is facing the loss of thousands of frontline officers under Tory plans. Mr Khan said the force could lose as many as 12,800 officers, which would reduce its strength by 40%, making it harder to tackle the terrorism threat. The Labour mayor said the Met had already had to make £600m of cuts since 2010 and is now facing £400m more. He said: “Our city has suffered two awful terrorist attacks since I was elected as mayor – and we must do everything possible…
Former London mayor Boris Johnson has said questions need to be answered over the monitoring one of the London attackers. Counter-terror agencies are facing scrutiny after it emerged that Khuram Shazad Butt was investigated in 2015, but was “prioritised in the lower echelons” of investigate work after officers found no evidence to suggest an attack was being planned. He also appeared in Channel 4 documentary The Jihadis Next Door last year. The Foreign Secretary told Sky News: “People are going to look at the front pages today and they’re going to say ‘how on Earth could we have let this…
The British Airways IT meltdown that left 75,000 passengers stranded over the bank holiday weekend may have been caused by human error, the head of its parent company has said. Willie Walsh, chief executive of International Airlines Group (IAG), set out further details about how the catastrophic outage is thought to have occurred and reiterated an apology to those affected. He announced an independent investigation into the IT shutdown, adding that the actions of an engineer who disconnected and then reconnected a power supply to the data centre in “an uncontrolled and uncommanded fashion” may be central. Hundreds of flights…

Prince William has described “Manchester’s strength and togetherness” as “an example to the world” during a surprise visit to the city. The Duke of Cambridge personally wanted to go to Manchester, following the Queen’s visit last week, to thank some of the police officers who were the first to arrive at the scene of the Manchester Arena attack. Talking to a group of officers inside the headquarters of Greater Manchester Police he said: “You guys did a fantastic job, but hopefully you’ve been talking about what you saw and how it has affected you. “Nobody can see that and not…

British Airways cabin crew are set to strike for four days as part of a pay dispute. Unite members will walk out from 16 June after union leaders and BA management failed to reach a breakthrough in the deadlocked row. There have already been several days of industrial action over the pay of staff in the so-called mixed fleet, which joined the airline in recent years. An offer aimed at ending the dispute was rejected last week. Unite said the planned walkout was prompted by BA’s “persistent refusal to restore the travel concessions that airline management had withdrawn from those…
Business chiefs have joined world leaders in condemning Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate change deal as experts warned it could backfire on the US economy. The bosses of some of America’s biggest corporations from Goldman Sachs to Apple signalled their dismay over the move as it was claimed rival nations would now lead the shift to clean energy. Mr Trump – who has previously called climate change a hoax – said the accord undermined the US economy and cost jobs, claiming that other countries were “laughing at us”. The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE),…
Blistering questions from a studio audience put Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn under pressure on their weak spots of social care and defence. In the final TV event of the campaign featuring the leaders of the two major parties, the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition faced a 45-minute barrage from members of the public. Mrs May was taken to task by four members of the audience about her social care policies; and by an emotional voter who had waited 18 months to access treatment for mental health problems. Mr Corbyn, a long-standing advocate of nuclear disarmament, struggled and…
