He rounded off a fine evening for himself and…
Activity in the UK’s manufacturing sector grew at its fastest pace for three years in April, according to a closely-watched survey. The Markit/CIPS UK manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 57.3 from 54.2 in March, well above economists’ expectations. A reading above 50 indicates growth. Markit said the sector enjoyed “solid improvement” last month, with new orders being received at the fastest rate since January 2014. The survey found the main source of new work came from the domestic market, but there was a “solid increase in new export business” due to a combination of better global economic conditions…
A US anti-missile defence system deployed in South Korea is now operational and can defend against North Korean missiles, Seoul has said. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defence interceptor system (THAAD) has “early capability” to respond to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threat, a Defence Ministry spokesman said. South Korean officials, however, told the Reuters news agency it would not be fully operational for some months. The system, set up at a converted golf course in Seongju, in the country’s southeast, has sparked controversy. China sees the system as a threat, and experts have debated whether its security benefits would…

Mrs May is hosting a working dinner in No 10, during what EU officials describe as a “flying…
Taxi-hailing app Uber has announced plans to introduce a flying taxi service in just three year’s time. Uber Elevate would feature electric vehicles capable of vertical take-off and landing, with app users able to book a ride at the push of a mobile phone button. Teaming up with aircraft manufacturers as well as an electric car charger firm, the service would initially launch in Dallas and Dubai by 2020. Uber’s chief product officer Jeff Holden said: “Urban Aviation is a natural next step for Uber in this pursuit, which is why we are working to make ‘push a button, get…
Top Trump administration officials will hold a rare briefing at the White House on Wednesday for the entire US Senate on the situation in North Korea. All 100 senators, who are more used to meeting on Capitol Hill, have been invited to the President’s official residence by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The White House says increased activity around North Korea should not be over-interpreted and is “not a part of something choreographed”. There have been suggestions that…
Over a quarter of people planning to retire this year fear a long-term Brexit hit to their finances, according to research examining their intentions. The study found 27% were worried about damage to their pension values and other income as a consequence of the country’s decision to leave the EU. Prudential, which carried out an online survey last November, said 11% of those who had intended to leave their jobs behind in 2017 had now changed their planned retirement date and 6% were intending to see out their days abroad instead. However, a majority 67% said their intentions had not…

NHS pay increases are currently subject to a 1% cap that has kept rises below the rate of inflation for seven consecutive years and is due to continue until 2020. Shadow health secretary Jon Ashworth will commit Labour to end the cap, introduce legislation to make “safe staffing” levels a matter of law and restore funding to students taking health-related degrees. In a speech to the UNISON Health Conference…
