Philip Hammond has defended a controversial rise in National Insurance for the self-employed as a “right and fair” move that will help the Government steer Britain through an uncertain future. The Chancellor is facing a growing political row over the hike in National Insurance contributions for high-earning self-employed workers announced in his first Budget. Speaking to Sky News, Mr Hammond said the move would make the system fairer considering that employees and self-employed workers have access to similar benefits from the state. “It’s only right and fair we should take a small step to closing the gap between the treatment…
Centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron would beat far-right leader Marine Le Pen in the first round of France’s presidential election and go on to win a runoff vote, according to a new poll. The 39-year-old former economy minister would win 26% of the vote in the first round of voting on 23 April, with Ms Le Pen getting 25%, the Harris Interactive poll showed on Thursday. That represents a rise of six percentage points since the last poll was conducted two weeks ago, after Mr Macron unveiled his campaign manifesto and has seen veteran politicians give him their support. In the…
Chelsea moved 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table after a 2-1 win at West Ham on Monday Night Football. A flowing counter-attack was expertly finished by Eden Hazard on 25 minutes at the London Stadium and the visitors doubled the score when Diego Costa capitalised on poor West Ham defending to turn home Cesc Fabregas’ corner. A stoppage-time strike by Manuel Lanzini reduced the deficit but it came too late for the Hammers to stage a comeback as Chelsea held on to extend their lead atop the table. Antonio Conte’s side are now 10 points…
The Trump administration has rolled out a revised edition of a controversial immigration executive order. The new order which goes into effect on 16 March, temporarily suspends immigration into the United States from now only six predominantly-Muslim countries. Citizens from Libya, Syria, Yemen, Iran, Somalia and Sudan will be subjected to a 90-day ban on travel to the United States. Iraq was previously listed among those nations, but a senior Department of Homeland Security official said the country was removed after the Iraqi government assured the Trump administration that they would share more information with the United States. It comes…
he company behind Peugeot has moved to allay fears that its €2.2bn (£1.9bn) deal to buy the Opel and Vauxhall brands from General Motors Europe will result in job losses or even factory closures. PSA’s statement said it intended to manage the group – the second largest in Europe with a 17% market share – by honouring existing commitments to workers. Vauxhall employs 4,500 staff between its two major sites – at Ellesmere Port, which makes the Astra, and Luton, where the Vivaro van is produced. Both plants have production contracts that are due to run to 2021 and 2025…
A Budget boost for education worth more than £500m is set to pave the way for a new generation of grammar schools. Chancellor Philip Hammond is to pledge £320m to help fund up to 140 new free schools, many of which are expected to become grammars. The cash boost comes as Theresa May declares it is her “personal mission” to create a grammar schools revolution, with a vow to lift the current ban on new selective schools. She has announced that a Schools White Paper, to be published within weeks, will contain plans to reverse the ban on new grammars…
“The Lord is giving you supernatural insight,” the BLW President says to global congregation. All expectations were exceeded and longings quenched as the man of God, Reverend (Dr.) Chris Oyakhilome, uttered the message of the Spirit for March 2017, calling it ‘the Month of Insight’! Panelists listen with rapt attention as the word of the month is shared. Further qualifying the Spirit’s direction for BLW citizens around the world, Pastor defined ‘knowledge’ to mean “clear,…
Pep Guardiola says he is happy with his goalkeepers Willy Caballero and Claudio Bravo, and will make a decision over their Manchester City futures in the summer. Caballero is back in favour, having been second choice behind Bravo for much of the season. Although the 35-year-old Argentine is out of contract in the summer, the manager’s comments seem to suggest there is no way back for Joe Hart. The England keeper was loaned out to Italian club Torino early in the season and, when asked about Caballero and Bravo, Guardiola said: “I’m so happy with Willy and Claudio. “We are…
Sir Philip Green has paid £363m to settle the pension schemes of collapsed retailer BHS, eight months after he pledged to “sort” the issue. “I have today made a voluntary contribution of up to £363m to enable the trustees of the BHS Pension schemes to achieve a significantly better outcome than the schemes entering the Pension Protection Fund (PPF), which was the goal from the outset,” he said in a statement. The billionaire said the settlement meant that all legal matters and claims from the Pensions Regulator had now been withdrawn. The cash payment remains significantly less than the £571m…
New drivers now face losing their licence the first time they are caught using a phone behind the wheel illegally. The penalties and fines handed out to offenders have been doubled to six points and £200 respectively. The new measures have been introduced in the wake of a number of high-profile cases and research suggesting the practice is widespread. New drivers can have their licence revoked if they get six penalty points within two years of passing their test, which could now be the result of sending a single text message or making a phone call. More experienced drivers can…
