US Republican candidate Donald Trump has said he may hit his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton harder in the next presidential debate, following their first encounter on Monday. Mr Trump said he held back “because he didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings”. In a Fox News interview, he also accused moderator Lester Holt of being tougher on him than on Mrs Clinton. Overnight polls with small samples were split on who won, but more rigorous surveys are due in the coming days. Research firm Nielsen estimates 81.4 million Americans watched Monday’s debate at home. This would topple the previous record of…
Veteran retailer George Davies has called for more women to be appointed to top jobs in British fashion. Mr Davies, founder of clothing retailer Next and behind the George at Asda label, says more needs to be done to promote them to director level. Women “have more vision than men” and their promotion would help boost firms, he told BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours. Campaigners Women in Retail welcomed his call, saying retail was often still a “boys’ club”. Research published earlier this year, by the group, found that while 60 per cent of those employed in the retail…
Sam Allardyce has left his post as England manager by mutual agreement with the Football Association after one match and 67 days in charge. It follows a newspaper investigation claiming he offered advice on how to “get around” rules on player transfers. Allardyce, 61, is also alleged to have used his role to negotiate a deal worth £400,000 to represent a Far East firm. An FA statement said Allardyce’s conduct “was inappropriate” and Gareth Southgate will take temporary charge. “He accepts he made a significant error of judgement and has apologised,” the FA said. “This is not a decision that…
When you discover that you have a strong desire for change, then God is at your door. The strong desire is the response of the human soul to God, as He knocks on the door of your heart. There’s something about the human soul; when your soul cries out in a strong desire, God immediately responds to it. God said, ‘before you call I’ll be there, before you ask, I’ll answer you’ (Isaiah 65:24). What do you do with your desire? Let’s learn from David. David had an excellent reputation of seeking God’s Presence. God called him a man after…
Jose Mourinho insists Wayne Rooney is still a big player for him despite dropping the Manchester United captain for the win over Leicester. United were rampant in the first half at Old Trafford, scoring four goals and eventually beating the champions 4-1, with Rooney getting seven minutes on the pitch at the end of the game. Juan Mata, his replacement, scored United’s second, but Mourinho insists Rooney is still a big part of his plans at the club. He told Sky Sports: “A big player for me, a big player for United and a big player for this country. I…
It is 90 box-office minutes that could change America. With Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump virtually tied in recent national polls, they enter the debate as the two least popular presidential candidates in modern history. Monday’s debate, which will be moderated by NBC’s Lester Holt, will see the two candidates speak on America’s direction, achieving prosperity and the country’s security. These will be covered across six 15-minute segments before an audience at New York’s Hofstra University. It has the potential to be a bloody battle, with a Superbowl audience of more than 100 million people forecast. In the blue corner,…

William says his children’s first trip to Canada starts “their own lifetime of friendship with this wonderful country”. Canada’s Prime Minister has praised the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as “strong advocates” for young people on day two of their official visit. Justin Trudeau said Prince William and Kate understood “how important young people are to our shared success”. The Royal pair touched down in Vancouver on Sunday where they are due to meet Syrian refugees who have only recently resettled in Canada. Prince George and Princess Charlotte are remaining with their nanny at Government House in Victoria as their…
Wayne Rooney says a lot of the criticism of him is “rubbish” and vows to give his best wherever Jose Mourinho plays him for Manchester United. United have suffered three defeats in their last four games, with Rooney playing the full 90 minutes in losses to Manchester City and Watford. Although Rooney is just three goals short of equalling Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time United record of 249, critics have suggested he should be taken out of the side, with Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic both having performed well this season. However, the 30-year-old has insisted he is used to being…
The Foreign Secretary says the Government expects to invoke Article 50, which begins the process to leave the EU, by early 2017. Boris Johnson has said the process of leaving the EU does not need to take two years once Article 50 is invoked. Speaking to Sky News in New York, the Foreign Secretary said he expected Article 50 – the formal mechanism for beginning the exit from the Union – to be invoked early next year. He also said Britain would “take back control” with a global free trade package and a deal on financial services. Once Britain invokes…
