Russia has said new sanctions imposed by the US over the Salisbury poisoning are “categorically unacceptable”. The new owner of Homebase will unveil plans to close about a quarter of its stores next week, threatening more than 1,000 jobs. The body of midwife Samantha Eastwood was found in a shallow grave wrapped in a duvet cover with tape around her eyes and face, a court has heard. The number of people killed in the aftermath of a powerful earthquake in Indonesia has risen to 131. Nearly 1,500 people have been injured, with 156,000 displaced after the tremors caused extensive damage to their homes. British Gas customers will see a price hike for the second time this year as the UK’s biggest supplier of energy said bills would increase by £44 on average. Six men have been found guilty of a conspiracy to smuggle migrants across the English Channel by boat in 2016. A German mother and her partner have been jailed for repeatedly raping the woman’s young son and selling him for sex online. The woman, 48, who has been identified only as Berrin T, was sentenced to 12 years for rape, sexual abuse and forced prostitution at the Freiburg state court in southwestern Germany.Her partner, Christian L, 39, was also sentenced to 12 years.The court ruled that the man, who had a previous conviction for child abuse, must remain in preventive custody after serving his sentence.
