BRITISH AIRWAYS ANNOUNCES FREE, HIGH-SPEED WIFI FOR PASSENGERS – IAG finalised a landmark deal with Starlink
British Airways is promising free ultra-fast satellite Wi-Fi for every passenger on board, regardless of which cabin they’re flying in.
The airline’s parent company, IAG, has signed a landmark deal with Elon Musk’s Starlink to bring high-speed, low-latency internet to more than 500 aircraft across British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling.
The service will begin rolling out next month — and it will work “gate to gate” — from the moment passengers board, right through to landing. And unlike traditional aircraft internet, Starlink will also work over oceans and remote areas — meaning uninterrupted streaming, calls, and video conferencing at 30,000 feet.
It forms part of a £7 billion transformation of the airline — scrapping the old model where most passengers had to pay up to £21.99 for a Wi-Fi package — or settle for limited free messaging.
This time — it’s totally free. Passengers will be able to connect multiple devices — with no login required — and BA says the internet speed will rival home broadband.
Aviation analysts say this is one of the most significant passenger-experience upgrades in recent years — and could force other global carriers to follow suit.
