EL SALVADOR ENACTS NEW LAW – The Ministry of Education banned the use of gender-inclusive language in public schools
El Salvador’s Ministry of Education banned the use of gender-inclusive language in public schools through a memorandum signed by Education Minister Karla Trigueros, which prohibits terms that the government has labelled as distortions of Spanish linked to gender ideology.
President Nayib Bukele reposted the directive on social media, reinforcing the administration’s stance and applying the measure to over 5,000 public schools nationwide. Alvaro Bueno, the father of a student, welcomed the move, saying it aligned with traditional values. At the same time, human rights expert Celia Medrano warned the ban violated international norms and erased recognition of human diversity.
Francisco Zelada, Secretary General of the Union of Workers in Public Education, supported the memorandum as promoting values and principles in schools.
Minister Karla Trigueros, a military captain and physician appointed in August, has promoted discipline and traditional norms in education, including uniform policies and courtesy rules.
