NEW ZEALAND PM SURVIVES VOTE OF CONFIDENCE-Luxon is exclusively focused on fixing the economy and building a better New Zealand
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon today, stated that he had the support of his party’s lawmakers after he called a vote of confidence in his leadership amid a drop in approval ratings for him and his party.
Luxon after a party room meeting said he moved a formal motion of confidence which was passed. He further said that Caucus had decisively backed his leadership, bringing the matter of approval to a close.
Luxon’s popularity reportedly fell over the past year amid a weakening economy and rising unemployment ahead of a national election in November.
A poll released on Sunday claims that support for the National Party fell by 4 percentage points to 30% and infers uncertainty in the current coalition government’s ability to win sufficient seats to retain power, if the election were to hold at this time.
Support for Luxon reportedly fell 4 points to 16%. Support for Chris Hipkins, leader of the Labour Party and a former prime minister, reportedly also stands at19%
