RIVER ISLAND TO SHUT 33 STORES ACROSS THE UK – The closures are set to put hundreds of jobs at risk
Fashion retailer River Island has revealed the list of 33 UK stores it plans to close, placing hundreds of jobs in jeopardy as it battles rising costs and a surge in online shopping.
The high street chain, which currently operates 230 stores and employs around 5,500 people, confirmed last week that the closures are part of a major restructuring plan. Alongside the proposed closures, River Island is also asking landlords to reduce rents at 71 other locations to keep them open.
CEO Ben Lewis said the shift to digital shopping habits has left the brand with “a large portfolio of stores that is no longer aligned to our customers’ needs.” He added that a steep increase in operating costs has worsened the financial strain, prompting the need for tough decisions.
The family-run business posted a £33.2 million loss in 2023 after sales dropped by 19%, according to its latest financial report. Despite this, Lewis says a turnaround plan is underway, though restructuring is a key part of that effort.
Stores facing closure include locations in Aylesbury, Brighton, Gloucester, Oxford, Wrexham, Leeds Birstall Park, and Edinburgh’s Princes Street, among others.
The company says it will consult with staff at affected branches and aims to redeploy workers where possible. Head office roles will not be impacted.
Creditors will vote on the proposal on August 4, and a court ruling is expected on August 7.
