SOUTH KOREA TO HOLD SNAP PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION ON JUNE 3 – Following the removal from office of Yoon Suk Yeol last week
South Korea’s government approved June 3 as the date for a snap presidential election on Tuesday, following the removal from office of Yoon Suk Yeol last week over his short-lived declaration of martial law.
The cabinet agreed the date on Tuesday after discussions with the National Election Commission since it needed to approve a public holiday for the election.
“This is an election to select the next president within a short period of 60 days. Given the unprecedented level of public interest, we will ensure the election is conducted in a fair and transparent manner,” said Acting Minister of South Korea’s Interior and Safety Ministry, Ko Ki-dong, at a news briefing.
Yoon was removed by the Constitutional Court for violating his official duty by issuing the martial law decree on December 3 and mobilizing troops in an attempt to halt parliamentary proceedings.
The law requires a new presidential election within 60 days if the position becomes vacant.
