STARMER RESPONDS TO TRUMP CRITICISM – PM addresses Chagos deal comments in parliament
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told parliament that recent criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump over the UK’s deal with Mauritius on the Chagos Islands was linked to wider tensions over Greenland.
Trump had described Britain’s decision to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago as a sign of weakness, arguing it highlighted why the United States should take control of Greenland. The archipelago includes a strategically important joint UK–U.S. military base.
Starmer said Trump’s remarks marked a shift from his earlier position and were intended to apply political pressure on the UK amid disagreements over the future of Greenland.
The exchange adds to the growing strain in relations between London and Washington, after the British Prime Minister publicly opposed Trump’s push to acquire the Arctic territory, which the U.S. president has framed as a security issue linked to China and Russia.
