TfL URGES PASSENGERS TO USE HEADPHONES – Campaign launched to urge commuters to be considerate or face fine up to £1,000
A new campaign is being launched in London today, encouraging passengers to use headphones when listening to music or watching videos on public transport.
From this week, posters will appear across the Elizabeth Line reminding travellers not to play music out loud or have conversations on speakerphone. The initiative is part of Transport for London’s “Travel Kind” campaign, which will later expand to the wider network.
Although rules already ban loud music on trains, enforcement depends on British Transport Police or rail operators. The problem has grown into a political issue, with the Liberal Democrats calling for fines of up to £1,000 for so-called “headphone dodgers,” and Conservatives saying passengers shouldn’t have to, in their words, “endure somebody else’s music.”
Deputy Mayor for Transport Seb Dance says while only a small minority cause disruption, those who play loud music or videos can be a real nuisance — and the campaign is about making journeys more pleasant for everyone.
