IRAN DEMANDS END TO US SANCTIONS – Ahead of New Round of Indirect Talks
The United States must correct its contradictory behavior of pressuring Iran on one hand while seeking negotiations with it on the other hand, said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman.
Regarding the indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States, Baghaei noted that in the first round of negotiations, both sides expressed their respective expectations for the negotiation framework. The reason Iran is engaging in indirect talks is because the United States, while negotiating, continues to pursue a policy of pressure and threats, a stance that Iran cannot accept.
As long as the United States continues with its coercive rhetoric, direct negotiations between Iran and the United States will not be possible, said the spokesman.
Baghaei said that Iran would draw lessons from past experiences in nuclear negotiations, emphasising that Iran is not seeking a “paper agreement” but rather demands that the United States take concrete and effective steps to lift sanctions.
A first round of indirect talks between United States and Iranian officials was held in Oman on April 12.
These were the first such discussions since the United States withdrew in 2018 from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was signed in 2015.
