TRAIN SERVICE RESUMES IN SPAIN AFTER MONDAY’S MAJOR BLACKOUT – The cause of Monday’s power outage was unclear
Spain’s national train services were partially restored on Tuesday (April 29) following a major power outage that paralysed transportation across the country the day before.
State-owned rail operator RENFE reported that services remain limited, with Barcelona still without train connections. In Madrid, up to 50% of regional trains were running and most regional services in Valencia were expected to resume.
The Madrid underground metro network said it had resumed operating at 8 am (0600 GMT) with 80% of trains circulating, but railway infrastructure operator Adif said most trains nationwide were not operating.
A huge power outage hit most of the Iberian Peninsula on Monday (April 28) morning, bringing both Spain and Portugal to a standstill – grounding planes, halting public transport and forcing hospitals to restrict routine proceedings.
The power supply was gradually restored in both countries from late Monday afternoon to early evening, though some operations could not resume on Tuesday morning.
The cause of Monday’s power outage was unclear.
