THAI MILITARY SHOWS LANDMINES FOUND AT BORDER – The latest clashes killed at least 43 and left over 300,000 people displaced on both sides
The Royal Thai Army invited the press corps and ASEAN military attachés to observe an area in eastern Surin province that was affected by a deadly clash between Thailand and Cambodia in July.
Surrounded by cordon tapes, officials revealed the spot where a Thai soldier stepped on a landmine after a patrol last week. They also disclosed that another mine had been found during a sweep of the area ahead of the delegation’s arrival.
The Thai army also destroyed a Cambodian BM-21 rocket that had been discovered. They also conducted a demonstration of ordnance recovery and evacuation to a hospital that had been affected by the fighting.
Cambodia denied accusations from Thailand that it has been planting new landmines along their shared border, stating in a news conference on Monday (August 18) that it does not stockpile weapons.
The latest clashes that started on July 24 were the worst fighting between the countries in more than a decade, and involved exchanges of artillery fire and jet fighter sorties that killed at least 43 and left over 300,000 people displaced on both sides
