Food price inflation in the UK eased to 12.7% last month, the second sharp drop in a row, as the price of milk fell back but eggs, sweets and oven chips continued to increase. Price rises slowed for the fifth month in a row in the four weeks to August 6, market research group Kantar reported on Tuesday. Fraser McKevitt, the head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar, said the 2.2 percentage point reduction in the pace of price rises was the second sharpest month-on-month fall in inflation it had recorded since 2008. “Prices are still up year on…
Erik ten Hag’s tricky second album at Manchester United started with a victory but few will understand how. The hosts were dominated by a Wolves team that changed manager days before the start of the season and United were lucky not to concede a penalty in added time but still ended with the points. Wolves missed a collection of chances to at least get a point out of the match as Raphaël Varane’s header settled the result. Many will feel Wolves should have had a final chance to level matters in the dying seconds of the match when André Onana clattered into…
A brief U.S. stopover by Taiwan’s vice president, Lai Ching-te, has led China’s foreign ministry to denounce him as a “troublemaker” and vowed a forceful response, drawing an emphatic rebuke from Taipei. Mr. Lai arrived in New York on Aug. 12 en route to Paraguay for the inauguration of its president. He’s also expected to touch down in San Francisco this week on his return trip from Paraguay, one of the 13 countries that maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has tried to isolate the island on the international stage by luring away Taipei’s remaining…
The scrapping of a target for patients to see a specialist within two weeks if their GP suspects they have cancer is expected to be confirmed within days under new plans by the NHS in England. Instead, the new “faster diagnosis standard” proposes that patients who have been urgently referred should have cancer ruled out or receive a diagnosis within 28 days. When a consultation on the proposals began last year, the NHS highlighted that the current two-week target set no expectation of when patients should receive test results or have a confirmed diagnosis. Cancer Research UK said the proposed new targets…
Chelsea are set to break the British transfer record for the second time in seven months after agreeing an £115m deal to sign the Brighton midfielder Moisés Caicedo, who will undergo a medical on Monday before completing his long-awaited move to Stamford Bridge. Liverpool had an offer of £111m for Caicedo accepted last Thursday but were unable to convince the player to move to Anfield. The Ecuador midfielder’s preference has always been to join Chelsea, who have thrashed out a deal that will see them pay £100m plus £15m in performance-related add-ons after days of frantic negotiations with Brighton, and…
A top House Democrat conceded on Aug. 13 that President Joe Biden’s son did a “lot of really unlawful” things, after the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it had named a U.S. attorney to head a special counsel investigation into the matter. “David Weiss, the U.S. attorney for Delaware, who had been nominated by Donald Trump, can make the decisions about what to charge, where to charge, and when to charge,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) told ABC’s “This Week.” “And with the collapse of the plea agreement that he had apparently worked out with Hunter Biden, now he wants to be…
Niger’s mutinous soldiers say they will prosecute deposed President Mohamed Bazoum for “high treason” and undermining state security, in an announcement hours after the junta said they were open to dialogue with West African nations to resolve the mounting regional crisis. If found guilty, Bazoum could face the death penalty, according to Niger’s penal code. Spokesman Col. Maj. Amadou Abdramane said on state television Sunday night the military regime had “gathered the necessary evidence to prosecute before competent national and international authorities the ousted president and his local and foreign accomplices for high treason and for undermining the internal and…

The message “Can’t find the server” or “This site can’t be reached” pops up when visiting Team Halo’s website. And when trying to reach all three of Team Halo’s previous email addresses, the email delivery subsystem returns with: “Address not found.” Team Halo was a social media influencer campaign formed as part of the United Nations Verified initiative and the Vaccine Confidence Project, and its members had targeted health care workers for what they called the spreading of “disinformation” about COVID-19. On X, previously known as Twitter, doctors Peter McCullough and Mary Talley Bowden were quick to rejoice over what appears to be the demise of…
Liverpool have agreed a £110m deal to buy Brighton’s Moisés Caicedo and are hoping to guard against any late hijack from Chelsea by swiftly concluding the signing of the midfielder. Chelsea had been considered the frontrunners for Caicedo, their top target in their hunt for midfield reinforcements, and submitted a bid worth up to £100m on Thursday night. However they have been gazumped by Liverpool muscling in on the deal for the Ecuador international.
