MPs CALL TO BAN PFAS IN UNIFORMS AND PANS- Forever chemicals have been associated with an increased risk of cancers
Several MPs have called for the UK government to ban the use of Forever chemicals from being used in school uniforms, food packaging, and frying pan cookware.
In a report into the risks of PFAs, the Environmental Audit Committee urged the government to introduce restrictions on the non-essential use of the chemicals and begin a phased restriction from 2027.
The report stated that these forever chemicals have been associated with an increased risk of cancers, immune suppression, fertility and development problems. Several of these chemicals have been established to be carcinogenic in nature.
Labour MP Toby Perkins, who also chairs the committee, said the evidence provided throughout the inquiry shows that Britain’s dependence on PFAS comes with a cost to human health and the environment also.
Today’s report said that the government should take a precautionary approach to approving new PFAS, that rather than waiting for proof that a chemical is harmful before banning it, and companies should instead need approval before they introduce a new PFAS substance.
The committee also called for the government to take a stronger approach to regulating PFAS and ensure that companies polluting waterways and soil are paying for it to be cleaned up
