WASHINGTON—Former President Trump has pleaded not guilty to a third set of criminal charges. Wearing his trademark blue suit, white shirt, and red tie, Mr. Trump, 77, appeared before Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya on Aug. 3 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, in the nation’s capital. Flanked by his attorneys, John Lauro on his left and Todd Blanche on his right, Mr. Trump sat at the defense table with a serious expression and occasionally looked at special counsel Jack Smith, the prosecutor who brought the charges against him. A 45-page indictment, filed on Aug. 1 by Mr. Smith,…

Chelsea have moved quickly in negotiations over Sánchez, who is set to cost £20m plus £5m in add-ons, and they remain in talks with Brighton over a deal for the Ecuador midfielder Moisés Caicedo. Nkunku was forced off during the first half of Chelsea’s 1-1 draw in Chicago and faces a fight to be fit for the start of the Premier League season. Pochettino, whose side host Liverpool on the opening weekend, is hoping the France international did not sustain any serious damage. “The doctors are checking him and I hope it’s not a big issue,” Chelsea’s head coach said. “He fell in the action which was maybe a penalty and he feels something…
All public elementary, secondary, and postsecondary schools in Louisiana are now required to feature “In God We Trust” in all classrooms. It’s the official motto of the United States since 1956. It comes as a new law, signed by Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, went into effect on Tuesday. The legislation, H.B. 8 (pdf), requires the national motto to be shown “on a poster or framed document that is at least 11 inches by 14 inches” in each classroom. The motto must be the “central focus” of the poster or framed document and have “large, easily readable font,” the law states. Public…
The Bank of England is poised to push interest rates to 5.25% on Thursday as it tries to bring down inflation with a 14th consecutive increase in the cost of borrowing. Amid government concerns that cost of living pressures are proving persistent, the Bank is likely to push rates up by 0.25 percentage points to a fresh 15-year high. The consumer prices index (CPI) fell last month, but remained well above most industrial nations at 7.9% and almost four times the Bank’s 2% target. Speculation that the monetary policy committee (MPC) will take a tougher stance and increase rates by 0.5 percentage points…
A coffee chain owned by Coca-Cola is facing boycott calls in the UK over its use of promotional material featuring a cartoon image of a transgender person with prominent scars from surgical breast removal. Costa Coffee, a leading coffee shop chain in Britain, has found itself mired in controversy over its use of the cartoon-like mural on the side of a Costa Express van, with critics saying it glorifies life-changing gender reassignment surgery and fuels gender dysphoria. “You are promoting the mutilation of healthy young girls,” wrote Reclaim Party leader Laurence Fox in a post on the social media platform…
Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team made a startling admission in its case against former President Donald Trump, acknowledging in a new court filing that it failed to turn over all evidence to Mr. Trump’s legal team as required by law while falsely claiming it had. Mr. Smith’s team said in a July 31 court filing (pdf) in its classified documents case against the former president that it had incorrectly claimed during a July 18 court hearing that it had provided all Mar-a-Lago surveillance footage to Mr. Trump’s defense attorneys, as required by law. “On July 27, as part of the…
One of Britain’s biggest housebuilders, Taylor Wimpey, has warned that the Bank of England’s rate rises to tame high inflation have weakened the housing market and made homes less affordable after a sales slump. Revenue fell 21% to £1.6bn in the six months to 2 July, dragging pre-tax profit down 29% to £237.7m. Its average selling price rose 6.7% to £320,000. In July, the builder’s net sales rate for private homes dropped to 0.47 an outlet per week, compared with 0.57 last year, while the cancellation rate rose to 24% from 19% as more customers pulled out of deals. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney has rejected former President Donald Trump’s bid to disqualify the lead prosecutor investigating allegations he interfered in Georgia’s 2020 presidential election, while also denying Mr. Trump’s attempt to block any indictments stemming from the probe. Mr. McBurney issued his order (pdf) on July 31, dismissing Mr. Trump’s motion to preclude any state prosecuting agency from using evidence derived from the work of the Special Purpose Grand Jury (SPGJ) impaneled in the probe, rejecting a motion to quash the SPGJ final report, and denying a motion to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis…
