Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has issued an executive order maintaining the state’s prohibition of COVID-19 vaccine mandates by any government entity, regardless of a vaccine’s approval status with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). [emaillocker id=521003] The Republican governor also said he was adding the issue of vaccine mandates to the Special Session agenda. Wednesday’s executive order (pdf) comes two days after the FDA gave full approval to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. Abbott had previously blocked making vaccinations under emergency use authorizations mandatory. The other two vaccines available in the United States, from Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, are currently operating under emergency…

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against school districts that have imposed mask mandates on students, seeking a declaration from the court that such requirements are unlawful. “Mask mandates for kids in schools are not supported by the science and are an arbitrary and capricious measure. The cure should not be worse than the disease,” the lawsuit (pdf), filed in the Circuit Court of Boone County, states. “The science shows that children are at a significantly lower risk of contracting a serious illness due to COVID-19 and that they do not generally spread the virus, even in school settings.” The attorney…
THE European Union has yet to declare how many refugees it will welcome from Afghanistan in the wake of the Taliban takeover – as the UK sets out its global credentials by accepting 20,000. Its member states are holding off on announcing how many Afghan asylum seekers they will offer shelter to amid fears of a new migrant crisis. This leaves the bloc flagging behind its international partners, who have already declared they will regime huge numbers of refugees from Afghanistan. The UK has already vowed to take in 20,000 vulnerable Afghans threatened by the Taliban. In recent days, Slovenian…
Paris Saint-Germain are considering a €160m (£137m) bid from Real Madrid for Kylian Mbappé, with the France forward hoping to seal a move to the Spanish giants. The 22-year-old has less than a year remaining on his contract in the French capital having turned down more than three different proposals from PSG to extend it over recent months. Despite the arrival of Lionel Messi from Barcelona, Mbappé has made it clear that he would like to move to La Liga after signing from Monaco on an initial season-long loan in 2017 before joining permanently for £165.7m a year later. It…
The last of the three Florida counties that took grant monies from a left-wing activist group funded by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to help administer the 2020 elections has returned the remaining funds to the group after a new state law banned such grants, according to the Public Interest Legal Foundation. Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, supporters of President Joe Biden and Democratic Party candidates, grabbed headlines during the last election cycle by giving as much as $400 million to the Chicago-based Center for Technology and Civic Life (CTCL). CTCL in turn then distributed the money in the form of grants to jurisdictions…
Boris Johnson is facing a corruption legal battle over whether his party has been funnelling taxpayer cash into Tory areas to give it a political advantage. The High Court will decide whether the PM’s £4.8bn “Levelling Up Fund” unlawfully and systematically sent cash to areas considered to be “of political benefit to the Conservative party”. Judges agreed to hear a legal challenge brought by the Good Law Project, stating: “The grounds are arguable.” The lawsuit, formally filed against Rishi Sunak, Robert Jenrick and Grant Shapps in their government roles, could find that the centrepiece of the government’s so-called “levelling-up” agenda…
Gender-critical feminist campaigners in Scotland have attacked the SNP’s plans to make it easier for people to legally change gender. As part of the party’s new power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens, the SNP have agreed to introduce a bill within the next year to reform and simplify the Gender Recognition Act, which governs how trans people can legally change gender. Currently, the Act requires people to prove to a Gender Recognition Panel they have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, they have lived in their new gender for at least two years already and then make legally-binding declaration they intend to live as this…
THE UK Government plans to introduce legislation that will alter the software on your Smart TV to give more prominence to the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 over US streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. [emaillocker id=521003] The UK Government is looking to introduce new legislation that will secure prominence for British public service broadcasters, like the BBC and Channel 4, on all Smart TVs. The decision follows criticism from the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, which slammed the Government for acting too slowly to secure prominence on Smart TVs. Under the Communications Act 2003, public service…
West Ham are making it impossible to view last season’s exploits as a fluke. They are no longer a soft touch with David Moyes in charge. The trademark flakiness has disappeared, substance finally accompanying the style, and there is no doubt that West Ham will keep moving in the right direction if they continue to trust in Moyes, whose strong and talented side looked ready to push for another top-six finish during their emphatic destruction of Leicester City. The London Stadium was bouncing at the end, the fans delighting in the authority of Declan Rice in midfield, the guile of Saïd…
