Alex Salmond has said he will not appear before MSPs on Tuesday morning after strongly criticising their investigation into a botched Scottish government inquiry into sexual harassment claims against him. The former first minister’s lawyers accused the Holyrood committee of taking an “absurd position” over Salmond’s submission to its investigation and setting “offensive” parameters on what he can say. Salmond’s lawyer, David McKie, said he would give evidence to the committee by 16 February but only if he was given written clarification on what he would be allowed to discuss without breaching legal restrictions imposed by the courts and Holyrood’s…
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said on Sunday that he was working on a bill with legislators in his state to prevent big tech companies taking action to moderate user content based on their political viewpoint. “We are working with Sen. [Bryan] Hughes on legislation to prevent social media providers like Facebook & Twitter from cancelling conservative speech,” Abbott said in a statement on Twitter. His announcement follows Florida’s move to pass legislation that would penalize social media companies that de-platform candidates during an election. The proposed law would fine companies $100,000 a day until the candidate’s access to the platform is restored. Florida will also require companies who promote…
British online fashion retailer Boohoo has bought the Dorothy Perkins, Wallis and Burton brands from the administrators of Arcadia for 25.2 million pounds ($34.6 million), completing the break-up of Philip Green’s empire. Like rival ASOS’s purchase last month of Arcadia’s prized Topshop, Topman, Miss Selfridge and HIIT brands, Boohoo’s deal does not include any stores, concessions or franchises. Administrators Deloitte said all 214 Dorothy Perkins, Burton and Wallis stores will permanently close. Some 260 head office staff will transfer to Boohoo, leaving 2,450 retail staff at risk of redundancy. Monday’s deal follows Boohoo’s purchase last month of the Debenhams brand…

England and Wales will go ahead with local government elections on May 6 despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the government said on Friday announcing a range of additional safeguards to make voting flexible and secure. The elections, which decide hundreds of positions in local governments across both countries, had been under review due the coronavirus, with England currently in a state of lockdown that is expected to last at least another month. But on Friday the government said that they had decided to go ahead, albeit with a series of special measures including more flexible rules on proxy voting and telling…
There were times in this match at White Hart Lane when the only suspense was in “how many?” Not just in terms of how many Chelsea could score, but how many matches Jose Mourinho could possibly have left in this Tottenham job. That’s how bad it got in the first half. As it was, it didn’t get any worse than 1-0 and Spurs did rally, but that entirely aimless response – and one badly-aimed header – only offered the illusion of any kind of substance to this approach. Any kind of substance in Mourinho’s old credentials are eroding. This was the first time he lost successive…
Former President Donald Trump’s team dismissed a request for the former president to testify under oath at the pending Senate impeachment trial. House Democratic impeachment managers led by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) sent a letter to Trump calling on him to testify at his second impeachment trial and said that if he doesn’t, they would use it against him during the event—a similar tactic and argument they used during the first impeachment trial. “Two days ago, you filed an Answer in which you denied many factual allegations set forth in the article of impeachment. You have thus attempted to put critical facts at…
British new car registrations slumped to their lowest January level since 1970 as lockdown measures shut showrooms, an industry body said on Thursday. Sales fell by an annual 39.5% to 90,249 vehicles last month according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). England, the most populous of the UK’s four nations, and the Scottish mainland both became subject to stricter rules from Jan. 5, restricting people’s movements and shutting many businesses to stop the spread of COVID-19. Car showrooms have been forced to close their doors to the public although many dealers are using online, delivery…
You wait nearly four years for a Premier League home defeat and then two come along at once. Jurgen Klopp will not appreciate the irony. What was billed as the tightest race in years may be on the verge of becoming a procession after Brighton’s Steven Alzate condemned the champions to the latest calamitous setback in their title defence. If Liverpool’s crown was already slipping, Manchester City can take a step towards a third coronation in four years when they come to Anfield this weekend. Brighton succeeded where Liverpool’s top four rivals from London recently failed, capitalising on the defensive…
The Senate late on Wednesday approved a power-sharing deal that lets Democrats control the committees. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) earlier announced that he and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) had finally reached an agreement on a power-sharing resolution in the chamber with an even partisan split of 50–50 with Vice President Kamala Harris able to break ties. “I am happy to report this morning that the leadership of both parties have finalized the organizing resolution for the Senate. We will pass the resolution through the Senate … which means that committees can promptly set up and get to work, with Democrats…
