TRUMP DEFENDS IRAN STRIKES – President says action stopped Iran getting nuclear weapon

U.S. President Donald Trump has defended American strikes on Iran, saying the action prevented Tehran from rapidly developing a nuclear weapon.

Speaking at a Republican policy retreat in Doral, Florida, Trump told party lawmakers the strikes stopped what he claimed was an imminent threat to Israel and other countries in the Middle East.

The president said Iran could have had a nuclear weapon within two weeks if the United States had not acted.

Trump also criticised Democrats in Congress who opposed a resolution describing Iran as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.

During the speech, the president highlighted what he called strong economic performance under his administration, pointing to falling inflation, rising incomes and record highs on the stock market.

He also pointed to improvements in border security and crime rates in the United States.
