The EU is to launch legal action against the UK after the government unilaterally decided to delay the implementation of parts of the special Brexit arrangements for Northern Ireland. A letter notifying the British government of infringement proceedings is expected to be issued at around midday on Monday. Almost 4.5 million people were waiting to start hospital treatment in England at the end of November 2020, the worst month for medical backlogs since records began. The president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England has said it shows the “calamitous impact” of coronavirus on waiting times.
