South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co said on Friday it was in early talks with Apple after a domestic broadcaster said the firms were discussing an electric car and battery tie-up, sending Hyundai shares surging 25%. The report comes weeks after Reuters reported that Apple was moving forward with self-driving car technology and was aiming to produce a passenger vehicle that could include its own breakthrough battery technology as early as 2024. Earlier on Friday, Korea Economic Daily TV said the iPhone maker and Hyundai were in discussions to develop self-driving electric vehicles by 2027 and develop batteries at U.S. factories…
Snow was blanketing large swathes of the country today as Britons were warned to remain cautious when venturing out into the hazardous conditions brought by the cold snap. In the early hours the Met Office revised its forecast and spared only the South East and parts of western Scotland from its yellow weather warnings. Icy surfaces were already wreaking havoc on the roads this morning and police in Derbyshire used an image of an upturned car to warn other drivers to be careful behind the wheel. The A1 in County Durham has been brought to a standstill with motorists enduring hour-long tailbacks…
President Donald Trump on Thursday called on the country to heal and have faith following civil unrest at the U.S. Capitol. Trump told Americans that he has now turned his focus on ensuring a “smooth, orderly, and seamless transition of power” to a new administration that will be inaugurated on Jan. 20, in a brief video message released on Thursday evening. Hours earlier, Congress certified the electoral votes for former Vice President Joe Biden in an emotionally-charged joint session. This came after a group of protestors waving American and Trump flags stormed in the Capitol building. The mayhem left at least four people dead—three…
National Express SUSPENDS all coach services due to new Covid lockdown and falling passenger numbers
National Express is to suspend its network of coach services due to tighter coronavirus restrictions and falling passengers numbers. The firm said that all of its coach services will be temporarily suspended from 11.59pm on Sunday and all journeys before Monday will be completed to ensure passengers are not stranded. All customers whose travel has been cancelled will be contacted and offered a free amendment or full refund, it added. Chris Hardy, managing director of National Express UK Coach, said the decision will be reviewed regularly and the company plans to be back on the road ‘as soon as the…
France’s CGT union will call for strikes at French power groups EDF and Engie on Jan. 14 and Jan. 19 if reorganisation plans are not withdrawn by next Wednesday, the union said in a press release on Thursday. These would be the fourth and fifth days of strike action since Dec. 10 at EDF over the Hercules restructuring plan. Unions fear the reorganisation of state-owned EDF, which is the subject of negotiations between Paris and the European Union, would pave the way for the dismantling and privatisation of the group. The CGT is also protesting against Engie’s review of its…
The Trump administration is considering adding tech giants Alibaba and Tencent to a blacklist of firms allegedly owned or controlled by the Chinese military, two people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. Targeting Asia’s two most valuable companies would be U.S. President Donald Trump’s most dramatic step yet in a recent raft of measures unleashed against Chinese companies as he seeks to cement his hardline policy against Beijing during his final days in office. Defense Department officials, who oversee the blacklist designations, have not yet finalized plans and are also discussing adding other Chinese firms to the list, the…
Britain’s construction sector extended its robust recovery from earlier COVID lockdown restrictions in December, a survey showed on Thursday, helping the broader private-sector economy eke out modest growth. Housing was the biggest driver of construction growth, reflecting the boost to builders’ confidence from a surge in prices and property purchases since the middle of the year, when lockdown curbs eased and property purchase taxes were cut. The IHS Markit/CIPS construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) slipped to 54.6 in December from 54.7 in November, but remained comfortably above the 50-mark that separates growth from contraction, as it has been since June.…
Manchester City reached their fourth straight League Cup final as second-half goals from John Stones and Fernandinho gave Pep Guardiola’s side a 2-0 win over Manchester United in Wednesday’s semi-final at Old Trafford. City will meet Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in the April 25 final as they seek their fourth League Cup triumph in a row. In a frantic opening to the game, both teams had efforts ruled out for offside with Stones turning the ball into his own net but being saved by the flag and Ilkay Gundogan converting a low ball in from Phil Foden but,…
Oil prices hit their highest since late February on Thursday after a fall in U.S. stockpiles added further support following the unilateral decision by Saudi Arabia to cut output. Brent crude was up 18 cents, or 0.3%, at $54.48 a barrel at 1015 GMT after earlier touching $54.90, levels not seen since before the the first COVID-19 lockdowns in the West. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose as far as $51.28 and was last up 33 cents, or 0.7% at $50.96. Wednesday’s storming of the U.S. Capitol by President Donald Trump’s supporters appeared to have little impact, while a slight…
British national radio station talkRADIO on Tuesday said that YouTube had reinstated its channel from the video-sharing platform after a review. TalkRADIO has more than 400,000 listeners and is regulated by Britain’s main broadcast watchdog, Ofcom. “TalkRADIO’s YouTube channel was briefly suspended, but upon further review, has been reinstated,” the radio station said in a statement. “We quickly remove flagged content that violate our community guidelines, including COVID-19 content that explicitly contradict expert consensus from local authorities or the World Health Organization.” YouTube did not immediately respond to a request for comment. TalkRADIO is one of Britain’s main news and…
