Manchester United’s attempt to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes has stalled because the clubs cannot agree on a fee. Sporting are demanding 80m euros (£68m) for the 25-year-old, which United are unwilling to pay. Talks continue between the clubs for a player rated at 45m euros by Tottenham Hotspur last summer. United have not ruled out targeting alternatives having made a priority of looking at midfield options this month.

A fourth person in China has died from a new coronavirus that has spread rapidly across the country, as authorities confirmed that it can be passed from person-to-person. An outbreak of a new coronavirus in China has spread to more cities, Chinese authorities said on Monday, as the number of patients tripled and a third person died, stoking concerns about the containment of the virus. The Daxing health commission in the capital Beijing said it had confirmed two cases of coronavirus, while one case has been confirmed in Shenzhen. A rare 1937 Edward VIII sovereign coin has been bought by a private collector for £1 million, making it the most expensive British coin ever. The coin was one of six prepared by the Royal Mint when Edward became king in 1936 and was due to be mass-produced for general circulation from January 1, 1937. However, he abdicated in December 1936 – quitting his job as king – to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson, meaning that production was cancelled and coinage with his face on never entered circulation.
