Tesco has suspended production at a factory in China following allegations forced prison labour was used to pack charity Christmas cards. The supermarket said it would de-list the supplier of the cards, Zheijiang Yunguang Printing, if it was found to have used prison labour. According to the Sunday Times, Florence Widdicombe, aged 6, opened a £1.50 box of Tesco cards to find that one of them – featuring a kitten with a Santa hat – had already been written in. In block capitals, it said: “We are foreign prisoners in Shanghai Qingpu prison China. Forced to work against our will.…
The US National Menorah was lit near the White House on Sunday for Hanukkah, in a celebration that is one of the most high-profile events in the country to mark the Jewish holiday. The eight-day Hanukkah celebration, also known as the Festival of Lights, started at sundown on Sunday December 22. The lighting of the National Menorah in Washington, on the Ellipse near the White House, dates back to 1979 when then-President Jimmy Carter participated in the ceremony at nearby Lafayette Park. The Jews have celebrated Hanukkah (The Festival of Lights) since 160 – 165 BC, to mark the miracle…
Bailey worked for 30 years at the BoE, where he was central to efforts to shore up the British banking system during the global financial crisis. In 2016 he moved to his current role running the Financial Conduct Authority, which is responsible for cracking down on financial misconduct. “Andrew was the stand-out candidate in a competitive field,” finance minister Sajid Javid told reporters. “He is the right person to lead the Bank as we forge a new future outside the EU and level-up opportunity across the country.” Bailey, 60, said in a statement that he was honoured to take over…
After suffering several defeats in the previous parliament, Johnson now enjoys a large majority and should face little opposition in passing the bill to implement Britain’s biggest foreign and trade policy shift in more than 40 years. More than three years since Britain voted to exit the EU in a 2016 referendum, the deep uncertainty over Brexit has now been replaced by the firm deadline of Jan. 31. “This is the time when we move on and discard the old labels of ‘leave’ and ‘remain’ … now is the time to act together as one reinvigorated nation, one United Kingdom,”…
The PM’s spokesman said the Withdrawal Agreement Bill would expand this power to courts below the Supreme Court. He added this would ensure judges at lower courts would not be “inadvertently” tied to the rulings “for years to come”. But others warned the move would cause legal uncertainty. MPs are set for an initial vote on the withdrawal bill on Friday, after the Conservatives won an 80-seat majority at last week’s general election. Previous rulings of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) are set to be incorporated into the case law followed by British courts after Brexit. The provision is contained in…
Real Madrid outplayed Barcelona for large parts of Wednesday’s top-of-the-table La Liga clash but were unable to make their dominance count and the ‘Clasico’ ended goalless to leave the Catalans top of the standings on goal difference. Both sides had shots cleared off the goalline while Real’s Gareth Bale did manage to put the ball in the net after the interval but his strike was narrowly ruled out for offside and the fixture ended scoreless for the first time since November 2002. The match was rescheduled from Oct. 26 due to the political turmoil that gripped Catalonia after separatist leaders…
Hong Kong protesters rallied outside diplomatic missions on Thursday (December 19) to urge foreign governments to follow the United States in passing human rights bills to raise pressure on Beijing and support their pro-democracy campaign. Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump signed congressional legislation requiring the State Department to certify, at least once a year, that Hong Kong retains enough autonomy from Beijing to justify favourable U.S. trading terms. About 1,000 people, most of them dressed in black and wearing face masks, marched on a route that took them by the consulates of Australia, Britain, the European Union, the United…
The Queen has set out the Conservative government’s agenda for the year ahead, following last week’s decisive election win. Legislation to take the UK out of the EU on 31 January was among more than 30 bills being announced during Thursday’s State Opening of Parliament. Other measures included guarantees on extra health service funding and longer sentences for violent criminals. PM Boris Johnson says he wants to unite the UK and “level up” opportunity. But Labour said the government would be judged on how far it made up for “years of underfunding” of the health service and, so far, its…
President Donald Trump has become the third US president in history to be impeached by the House of Representatives, setting up a trial in the Senate that will decide whether he remains in office. The House voted on two charges – that the president had abused his power and that he had obstructed Congress. Nearly all Democrats voted for the charges and every Republican against. President Trump’s Republicans control the Senate, so it is highly unlikely he will be removed from power. Democrats are already unhappy at the way the trial could be held. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has now…
Representatives of Allies countries and Germany gathered in Bastogne – a small town in the Belgian Ardennes – on Monday to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, the bloodiest single engagement for U.S. forces in World War Two. On December 16, 1944, the Germans used the bad weather and forested hills to launch a surprise attack on the lightly defended 140 km (90 mile) front. The six-week battle was dubbed the Battle of the Bulge because of the large dent German forces made in the front line as they pushed towards the northern Belgian port of…
