Malta police arrested one of the country’s most prominent businessman in connection with an investigation into the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, two sources said. Yorgen Fenech was detained after police intercepted his yacht off the Mediterranean island, sources with knowledge of the matter said. His arrest came the day after the government said it would offer a pardon to a suspected middleman in the 2017 murder of Caruana Galizia if he provided legal binding evidence of who was behind the killing. In February 2017, eight months before she died in a car bomb, Caruana Galizia wrote in her…
British naturalist David Attenborough has said that people are changing their habits when it comes to plastic waste, following the global impact of the broadcaster’s Blue Planet II documentary and the campaigning of young people. In September millions of young people flooded the streets of cities around the world demanding political leaders to take urgent steps to stop climate change, uniting in a worldwide protest inspired by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. Alarmed by images of the Greenland ice sheets melting and the Amazon rain forests burning, protesters abandoned schools, shops and offices in nearly every corner of the globe,…
Prime Minister Boris Johnson shook hands with his rival, opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, during a live television debate, as both men agreed to improve the tone of Britain’s political debate. But the debate was otherwise testy, as Britain’s departure from the EU dominated the opening exchanges when both leaders trying to cast doubt over the other’s pledges ahead of the December 12 election. Audience members laughed at Corbyn’s insistence that his Brexit position was clear, as well as at Johnson’s claim that he believed the truth mattered in the vote. Johnson is promising to implement the exit deal he…
Volkswagen parts supplier Prevent Group on Monday filed a lawsuit alleging the German automaker (VOWG_p.DE) used anticompetitive tactics to stop larger suppliers like the company from acquiring smaller rivals in the United States. In the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Detroit, the auto parts supplier said Volkswagen extracted written agreements from suppliers not to sell themselves to Prevent Group. Volkswagen did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The company, which is seeking damages in excess of $750 million(579.20 million pounds), said that after the diesel emissions scandal, Volkswagen used its market power to squeeze…
LONDON (Reuters) – Whether Brexit purists or radical socialists win Britain’s election next month, a deluge of fresh debt is set to bloat the country’s 1.6 trillion pound ($2.1 trillion) government bond pile. But the permutations around the Dec. 12 election – and the implications for Brexit – make it tough for holders of British government debt to predict just what the borrowing bonanza will mean for them. In 2010, Bill Gross – then cast as “king of the bond market” – warned that British government bonds were “resting on a bed of nitroglycerine” because of Britain’s large budget deficit.…

Playing attacking football and winning trophies still remains the ultimate goal for Manchester United, the Premier League club said after sponsorship deals helped them post a jump in first-quarter core earnings. The 20-time English champions, who failed to qualify for this season’s Champions League, Europe’s premier club competition, saw their revenue flat line in the quarter but stood by their annual revenue and core profit targets. Financial performance was driven by an 8% jump in sponsorship revenue largely due to new deals with well-known brands, highlighting the club’s commercial appeal even as they misfire on the pitch. Executive Vice Chairman…
YANGON (Reuters) – A Myanmar judge on Monday extended the sentences of a troupe of satirical performers jailed for mocking the military, in a case that has raised new concern about freedom of expression. Seven members of the Peacock Generation troupe were arrested in April after taking part in Thangyat, a centuries-old form of poetry and performance that pokes fun at the flaws and foibles of the social and political system. During live shows and a Facebook broadcast, they criticized the army’s continued role in politics and shared pictures of a dog in a military jacket. Five members of the…
LONDON (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday he was putting on hold further cuts in corporation tax and told voters he would use the money for spending on health and other priorities. His comments addressed a central issue in a Dec. 12 election as Johnson has been under pressure to show how he would pay for a plan to reverse cuts to many public services over the past decade and boost infrastructure investment. “We are postponing further cuts in corporation tax,” Johnson told business leaders at a conference organised by the Confederation of British Industry, an…
