The U.S. wants the publisher to answer for charges of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion in connection with a leak of classified documents. British Prime Minister Theresa May fired her defence secretary, Gavin Williamson, on Wednesday saying an investigation suggested he was to blame for leaking discussions about Chinese telecoms company Huawei from her National Security Council (NSC). Last week it emerged that Britain would allow Huawei a restricted role in building parts of its 5G network, seeking a middle way in a bitter dispute between the United States and China over the next generation of communications technology. Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange has been sentenced to 50 weeks in jail for breaching his bail conditions. The 47-year-old was found guilty of breaching the Bail Act last month after his arrest at the Ecuadorian Embassy. He took refuge in the London embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over sexual assault allegations, which he has denied. In a letter read to the court, Assange said he had found himself “struggling with difficult circumstances” and he apologised to those who “consider I’ve disrespected them”, a packed Southwark Crown Court heard.

Police have arrested a suspect in a shooting that left two people dead and four others injured, three critically, at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Local media have identified the man as 22-year old Trystan Terrell. Police were seen escorting Terrell into custody. US President Donald Trump has sued two banks in a bid to stop them from handing over his financial records to Congress. The lawsuit against Deutsche Bank and Capital One was filed after Democrat-led committees issued subpoenas for information on his finances. His three eldest children and the Trump Organisation joined the lawsuit, which argues there are no legitimate grounds for investigating his business affairs. A Deutsche Bank spokeswoman told the New York Times: “We remain committed to providing appropriate information to all authorized investigations”There was no immediate comment from Capital One.

Vodafone has denied a report saying issues found in equipment supplied to it by Huawei in Italy in 2011 and 2012 could have allowed unauthorised access to its fixed-line network there. A Bloomberg report said that Vodafone spotted security flaws in software that could have given Huawei unauthorised access to Italian homes and businesses. The US refuses to use Huawei equipment for security reasons. New Zealand police responded to an incident, arresting a man in Christchurch on Tuesday following reports of a possible bomb threat in the city, where 50 people were killed in attacks by a lone gunman on two mosques in March.
