Turkey angrily rejected international criticism of its attack on a Kurdish militia in Syria, reporting progress by its forces on the second day of an operation that world powers fear could further destabilise a region in turmoil. Taking aim at the European Union and Arab powers Saudi Arabia and Egypt, which have voiced opposition to the operation, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said those objecting to Turkey’s actions were “not honest”. He threatened to permit Syrian refugees in Turkey to move to Europe if EU countries described his forces’ move as an occupation. NATO-ally Turkey has said it intends to create…
Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn accused Prime Minister Boris Johnson of dragging politically neutral Queen Elizabeth into the country’s looming general election by holding a Queen’s Speech. Corbyn also promised Britain a radical new political agenda. Britain is trapped in an acute political crisis over voters’ 2016 decision to leave the European Union and PM Johnson’s government has no majority in parliament, no agreed plan for leaving the bloc, and only three weeks until the exit deadline. Both the ruling Conservatives and Labour want an early election, but Corbyn says he will not agree to one until Johnson has…
Ahead of a key meeting with Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with mental health campaigner Ben West at Downing Street. West handed Johnson a petition on mental health before being invited inside by the Prime Minister. This comes ahead of Johnson’s meeting with Varadkar in a last-ditch attempt to revive a British proposal for a Brexit deal that the European Union said falls far short of what is needed for an orderly seperation. Just three weeks before the United Kingdom is due to leave the world’s biggest trading bloc, it is still unclear on what…
The European Union’s Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said the bloc could not accept the latest proposal from London. Speaking at a plenary session of the European Parliament, Barnier said sealing a Brexit deal with Britain ahead of October 31 would be ‘very difficult’ but remained possible with ‘good will on both sides.’ Speaking at the same Parliament session, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he would not ‘exclude a deal’ but called for the ‘blame game which started in London’ to come to an end. European Parliament head David Sassoli said EU lawmakers were ready to accept a postponement of…
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was awarded as a “Legend of Football” on Monday evening to honour his more than two-decade spell as head coach at the North London club. With reported links to a job at world soccer governing body FIFA, the Frenchman revealed little about his future plans, saying he saw a larger responsibility for the sport around the world. Former friends and foes showered praise on Wenger, including long-time rival Alex Ferguson. He said he enjoyed competing against Arsenal during his spell at the helm of Manchester United. Former strikers Thierry Henry and Ian Wright were among…
Turkish warplanes have bombed parts of north-eastern Syria at the start of an offensive which could lead to conflict with Kurdish-led allies of the US. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the operation was to create a “safe zone” cleared of Kurdish militias which will also house Syrian refugees. According to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), civilian areas came under attack from Turkish planes and Turkish ground forces have also been massing on the border. The offensive was launched just days after President Donald Trump controversially withdrew US troops from northern Syria, a decision announced after a phone call…
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with European Parliament President David Sassoli in London on Tuesday, as both the UK and the EU position themselves to avoid blame for a delay or a disorderly no-deal Brexit. Johnson greeted Sassoli outside Number 10 Downing Street before they shook hands and posed for photographs inside. In a sign that Johnson’s last-ditch proposals to bridge the Brexit impasse have failed, a Downing Street source said German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Johnson spoke on Tuesday morning and she made clear that a deal was “overwhelmingly unlikely”. The European Union, in turn, accused Britain of…
UK parliament was suspended, or prorogued, for a short period to launch its new legislative agenda. PM Johnson’s previous suspension of parliament was ruled as unlawful after critics argued that it was being used to prevent lawmakers from scrutinizing his Brexit plans, forcing parliament to reconvene amid angry scenes. That suspension had been due to last five weeks, but with parliament needing to be prorogued before any new legislative launch, known as a Queen’s Speech, the government requested a much shorter suspension, which is expected to last until Oct. 14.
LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s regulator for payments systems said it was concerned that Barclays bank will no longer allow customers to withdraw money from post offices. Post offices have sought to plug gaps created by banks removing cash machines from rural areas. “This step by Barclays reduces the number of places their customers can go to get cash,” the Payment Systems Regulator said in a statement on Tuesday. “We are concerned about the impact this will have, and we will be closely monitoring the steps Barclays plan to take to make sure there are suitable alternatives for its customers to…
