A US judge has given the go-ahead for telecoms giant T-Mobile US to buy its smaller rival Sprint. The £20bn deal will mark a major shakeup of the industry as it will mean there will be just three major players in the American mobile phone market. The ruling will pave the way for the completion of a deal first agreed two years ago.Shares in Japan’s SoftBank, which owns Sprint, jumped after the announcement. A federal judge rejected a claim by a group of Democrat-led states that the planned merger would break anti-competition laws and mean higher prices for customers. If…

Hong Kong’s leader called for ‘full cooperation’ of the people on Tuesday after four residents showed symptoms of coronavirus and were sent to a hospital from a residential building in Hong Kong, where a man and woman confirmed with coronavirus lived. Early Tuesday morning, authorities evacuated more than 100 residents in 35 households after two people from the building were confirmed with the coronavirus. The government said it was investigating drainage pipes in the building of the Tsing Yi district in the New Territories amid worries the virus could have spread through the system. Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam…
A Court of Appeals judge has ordered the Home Office not to deport people to Jamaica on Tuesday unless they had access to a functioning, non-O2 Sim card on or before 3 February. The order comes after lawyers argued some set to be deported from two detention centres could not get legal advice due to issues with an O2 mast. The Home Office says it is “urgently asking the judge to reconsider”. Earlier, Labour’s Diane Abbott said removing the detainees was “unfair”. But Home Secretary Priti Patel said many were guilty of “serious offences”. Ms Patel said every person on…
The European Union will provide protective equipment such as gloves and masks to China, the EU Commissioner for Crisis Management said today. Speaking to journalists in the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), Janez Lenarcic added that France and Germany had already sent 12 tonnes of equipment to China to help fight against a spreading coronavirus epidemic and that the EU was assessing what more its member states could offer. The World Health Organization last week said the world was facing a chronic shortage of gowns, masks, gloves and other protective equipment in the fight against the virus. President Xi…
Britain’s decision to grant China-based Huawei Technologies HWT.UL a limited role in its 5G network despite U.S. concerns will not hinder efforts to reach a U.S.-UK trade deal, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said on Friday. “We will be working with our British cousins on 5G. We think we can work with them and show them options. We’d love to do a free trade agreement,” Kudlow told Fox Business Network. Asked if a reportedly contentious call between U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson could interrupt the planned deal, Kudlow said: “No, it wont” and cast…
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Sunday a coalition between his centre-right Fine Gael party and left-wing nationalists Sinn Fein is not an option as the parties’ policies are “not compatible”. “For us coalition with Sinn Fein is not an option, but we are willing to talk to other parties,” Varadkar told journalists in Dublin, speaking following Saturday’s election. The head of rival centre-right party Fianna Fail earlier on Sunday declined to rule out a coalition with Sinn Fein.
LONDON/MADRID (Reuters) – A British man who contracted the new coronavirus while attending a conference in Singapore may have led to seven other people catching the disease when he stopped off at a chalet in a French mountain village on his way home, health experts said on Sunday. The man, Britain’s third case of the virus, stayed for four days in the chalet in Les Contamines-Montjoie late last month, under the same roof as a group of British holidaymakers as well as a British family who lived in the village. Five people from that group in the Alpine ski resort,…
Heavy rain and gusts of wind reaching more than 90mph brought widespread flooding and travel disruption as Storm Ciara hit the UK. Thousands of people were left without electricity and sporting events were cancelled due to the weather. Airlines also cancelled hundreds of flights, while several rail firms urged passengers not to travel. Ferry passengers also faced delays and cancellations, and drivers were warned to take extra care. Large parts of the UK were covered by an amber warning for very strong…
Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry has smashed a slew of records in a sparkling cricketing career and now hopes to play a part in another by helping draw the biggest crowd to a women’s sporting event at next month’s T20 World Cup final. The record has long been held by the 1999 women’s soccer World Cup final, which saw 90,185 pack into the Rose Bowl in California to watch the United States defeat China. However, T20 World Cup organisers hope the final at the 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground can trump it — particularly if the formidable host nation features. While the…
