Passengers were finally allowed to disembark from the Costa Smeralda cruise ship this morning after tests carried out on a woman from Macau who had been onboard proved she did not have coronavirus. Buses collected some 1,000 passengers, many wearing protective face masks, who were allowed to continue their holiday after a day and night stuck on board the cruise ship at the Italian port of Civitavecchia. Italian passengers onboard the ship said there had been some tension as it had not been made clear what was going on. The Costa Crociere company’s ship docked in the port north of…
Shiok Meats, a Singapore-based start-up company, aims to become the first company in the world to bring shrimp grown in a lab to diners’ plates. More than two dozen firms are testing lab-grown fish, beef and chicken, hoping to break into an unproven segment of the alternative meat market, which Barclays estimates could be worth $140 billion by 2029. The so-called clean meat, which is genuine meat grown from cells outside the animal, is still at a nascent stage. Shiok grows minced meat by extracting a sample of cells from shrimp. The cells are fed with nutrients in a solution…
Investigators said on Tuesday (January 28) that the helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant was involved in a “high energy impact crash” when it slammed into a hillside in foggy weather on Sunday, killing the basketball star and eight others, including his 13-year-old daughter. As the helicopter crash probe entered its second full day in the foothills just outside Calabasas, about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, the NTSB investigators combed through the wreckage and used drones as they sought uncover the cause of the accident. Low clouds, fog and limited visibility over the region at the time of…
With Britain set to leave the European Union at 2300 GMT on Friday, the possible impact of Brexit is sinking in for residents of the French port city of Calais. Calais’s economy is deeply intertwined with Britain’s, with trucks and ferries transporting goods and people within Europe’s single market. It also caters to a steady flow of British tourists. The maritime route across the 23-mile wide Strait of Dover has been one of Britain’s main arteries for European trade since the Middle Ages. Calais handles some 2 million trucks per year and a 700 million euro expansion to be completed…
McDonald’s will add chicken sandwiches to its breakfast menu at all of its U.S. restaurants, the world’s largest burger chain said on Tuesday, to fend off competition from Chick-Fil-A and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. Breakfast has been an important sales driver for fast-food chains and as more rivals like Wendy’s and Dunkin’ move into the space with new products, the pressure to retain customers has become more intense. Earlier this month, McDonald’s expanded its Beyond Meat vegan burger trials in Canada, catering to the growing demand for plant-based proteins in fast-food restaurants. Many experts said a nationwide rollout of chicken sandwiches…
Asian shares erased earlier gains on Wednesday, swinging into negative territory as a spike in new Chinese virus cases sent Hong Kong stocks tumbling and fueled fears about the economic impact of the outbreak. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.52%. Hong Kong shares, fell 2.8% on their first session after a two-and-a-half trading day break for Lunar New Year, led by declines in financial services, real estate, and consumer goods companies. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam previously announced that high-speed rail services and ferries would be suspended from midnight on Thursday , and that the number…
President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans in the U.S. Senate came under renewed pressure to allow witnesses in his impeachment trial, while his defense team largely ignored disclosures from a former White House adviser. The elephant in the room on Day 2 of Trump’s defense arguments was John Bolton, the former national security adviser whose unpublished book manuscript, according to the New York Times, included disclosures that go to the heart of the abuse of power charge against Trump. The Senate may resolve the issue of whether to call witnesses in a vote on Friday or Saturday. Democrats said the Bolton…
The UK’s financial regulator has asked banks to explain how they have decided on their new overdraft rates. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said most High Street banks had set “very similar prices” after it demanded changes to the system. Several big brands including Santander, Lloyds Banking Group and HSBC are set to bring in a 39.9% rate this year. The FCA has sent a letter to banks, asking them to explain what influenced their decision. The City regulator has also asked how the banks will deal with any customers who could be worse off following the changes.
A government fund is to be launched later to restore historic railway lines closed more than 50 years ago under the so-called Beeching cuts. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps will visit Fleetwood to announce £21.9m for two railway lines and a New Stations Fund. The £500m fund was promised in the Tory election manifesto in November, but Labour called the plan “meaningless”, adding that £500m would reopen just 25 miles of railway. And the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) described the funds as a “drop in the ocean”. Work is not being started on restoring the historic railway lines. Instead…
Boeing Co began the maiden flight on Saturday of the world’s largest twin-engined jetliner as the embattled planemaker steps up competition with European rival Airbus in a respite from a crisis over its smaller 737 MAX. The 777X, a larger and more efficient version of Boeing’s successful 777 mini-jumbo, took off outside Seattle at 10:09 a.m. local time after high winds forced the company to postpone two earlier attempts this week. The 777X will compete with the recently introduced Airbus A350-1000 which seats about 360 passengers. Both reflect the growing range and efficiency of twin-engined jets that are steadily displacing…
