British Prime Minister Boris Johnson arrived in Berlin to attend a one-day summit aimed at reaching a ceasefire between the warring factions in Libya and the ”external proxies” involved in th e conflict to bring about an end to hostilities. Countries struggled on Sunday to draw eastern military commander Khalifa Haftar back into diplomacy, days after he quit talks and more than half of Libya’s oil output was shut in areas he controls. Haftar, whose forces are bearing down on the capital Tripoli with the backing of Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Russian mercenaries and African troops, was expected to…
Buckingham Palace said on Saturday that Prince Harry and his wife Meghan will no longer be working members of Britain’s monarchy and they will pay their own way in life as they embark on an independent future. They will also no longer use their “Royal Highness” titles, the palace said in an announcement that sought to end turmoil in the monarchy sparked earlier this month when the couple announced they wanted to reduce their official duties and spend more time in North America. The queen and senior family members met last week to discuss the situation and have been in…
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday (January 17) he expects top-scorer Marcus Rashford to miss Sunday’s Premier League game against runaway leaders Liverpool but the striker will be given the maximum time to prove his fitness. Rashford, who has scored 14 league goals this season, picked up a back issue in the 1-0 FA Cup replay win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday after coming on as a substitute. The 22-year-old scored the opener when United held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at home in October, the only time Juergen Klopp’s side have dropped points in the league…
A rare 1937 Edward VIII sovereign coin has been bought by a private collector for £1 million, making it the most expensive British coin ever. The coin was one of six prepared by the Royal Mint when Edward became king in 1936 and was due to be mass-produced for general circulation from January 1, 1937. However, he abdicated in December 1936 – quitting his job as king – to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson, meaning that production was cancelled and coinage with his face on never entered circulation.
Amazon.com Inc CEO Jeff Bezos said his company will invest $1 billion to bring small businesses online in India, reaching out to some of his fiercest critics in a goodwill visit that saw him donning traditional Indian attire. The investment of $1 billion will help bring more than 10 million Indian businesses online and enable exports of India-made goods worth $10 billion by 2025, Amazon said. Amazon and Walmart’s Flipkart have been hit with a barrage of criticism from India’s brick-and-mortar retailers who accuse the U.S. giants of violating Indian law with deep discounts and discriminating against small sellers by…
China has reported its weakest economic growth for almost three decades as it battles a series of challenges including its trade war with the United States. The world’s second-largest economy said output was 6.1% higher during 2019 – the lowest level since 1990 – down from 6.6% in the previous 12 months. The fourth-quarter figure came in as expected at 6% as it was not until December that Beijing and Washington agreed on a so-called phase one deal, signed this week, to ease trade tensions. The phase one deal means his government has agreed to cancel planned tariff hikes on…

As he surfaces, he embraces wife Larissa and appears to be overcome with joy and crying tears of joy. The ceremony was led by a Pastor, Brazilian gospel singer Isaias Saad, a group…
The Democratic-led House of Representatives voted to send two formal charges against President Donald Trump to the Senate, clearing the way for only the third impeachment trial of a U.S. president to begin in earnest next week. Lawmakers voted 228 to 193 to give the Senate, controlled by Trump’s fellow Republicans, the task of putting him on trial on charges of abuse of power for asking Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden and of obstruction of Congress for blocking testimony and documents sought by Democratic lawmakers. The 100-seat Senate is expected to acquit Trump, keeping him in office, as…
Last year was the second-hottest year since records began, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said, adding that heat was likely to lead to more extreme weather events like the Australian bushfires in 2020 and beyond. The figures from the Geneva-based WMO crunches several datasets including from NASA and the UK Met Office. It showed that the average global temperature in 2019 was 1.1 degree Celsius (34 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels, creeping towards a globally agreed limit after which major changes to life on Earth are expected. Scientists, such as Omar Baddour, say climate change likely contributed to severe weather in…
Foreign Minister Dominic Raab said that Britain is willing to work with the United States and European partners to build a broader initiative that would address not just Iran’s nuclear ambitions but its destabilising activity in the region. Raab told parliament that the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) – commonly referred to as the Iran nuclear deal – remained the best available deal for restraining Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. In a step that will increase diplomatic pressure, Britain, France and Germany launched a dispute mechanism to challenge Iran for breaching limits on its nuclear programme under an agreement that Washington…
