Retail sales grew by a better than expected 0.8% in February but the figures failed to lift the gloom surrounding the high street. Health workers are being urged to accept a pay deal for NHS staff worth up to 6.5% over three years after unions reached agreement with the Government. Unemployment rose by 24,000 to 1.45 million in the three months to January – but wage growth improved, official figures show. The man suspected of carrying out a series of bombings in Texas has died after blowing himself up in his car as police closed in on him.
