Volkswagen has ordered an immediate inquiry into allegations German carmakers funded scientific tests in which monkeys and humans were exposed to diesel fumes. The New York Times reported on Friday that research aimed at defending the fuel’s impact on the environment was carried out at a lab in the US in 2014. The paper claimed it was led by the now defunct European Research Group on Environment and Health in the Transport Sector, also known as EUGT, a body that was solely funded by VW, Daimler and BMW. All three companies have reacted with horror to the testing revelations. Daimler,…

The UK’s pilots union has been given official recognition status by Ryanair for the first time in the airline’s 32-year history. The British Airline Pilots’ Association (Balpa) said it had signed a “historic” voluntary trade union recognition agreement after the no-frills carrier signalled last month that it was willing to talk to pilot unions across Europe amid a string of disputes. Ryanair was seen as wanting to limit disruption following a damaging blunder over rotas which led to its decision in the autumn to cancel flights affecting almost 700,000 customers. The climbdown over its 32-year refusal to recognise unions led…

Theresa May is facing fresh turmoil among her own MPs and Cabinet ministers as divisions deepen in the Government over Brexit. She faces the embarrassment of a secret study on the impact of Britain leaving the European Union being leaked. It had been meant only for ministers. Adding to Mrs May’s woes, The Times is reporting that some senior party donors want her to quit. The pressure mounts…

JERUSALEM, Israel – This past week, just a few short weeks after the White House announced the US would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, President Trump sent Vice President Mike Pence to the Middle East with a mission: to stand with Israel and to reassure Arab alies that the US has a vision for peace. In the eyes of many, especially in Israel, he did both, with grace and confidence. Late last year, CBN’s David Brody sat down with the vice president and asked him about his upcoming trip. He responded, “If the world knows nothing else, the world should…

The UK economy grew by a better than expected 0.5% in the fourth quarter of 2017 but remains “slower and uneven”, official figures show. Britain’s performance in the October-December period was an improvement on the 0.4% rate seen in the previous quarter but still meant that for the year as a whole, growth was at its weakest since 2012. The pound, which in recent days has been trading at its highest levels since the Brexit vote, lifted by a cent to just under $1.43 in the wake of the figures. Gross domestic product (GDP) rose by 1.8% in 2017, below…

Downing Street has insisted it still has “full confidence” in Philip Hammond, as the Chancellor doubled down on comments that sparked fury from Brexiteers. Speaking in Davos, Mr Hammond brushed away criticism for saying the UK and EU economies would move apart “very modestly” after separating. He said there were people on “both sides of the argument” who “do not support us in our intention to deliver the Brexit people voted for”. And the Chancellor revealed he had not spoken to Theresa May since Number 10 stepped in to avert a Conservative party civil war breaking into the open. He…

British business leaders have lambasted Theresa May’s cabinet for infighting over the UK’s trade position, accusing ministers of putting ideology before jobs and investment. Carolyn Fairbairn, director general of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), will warn the Government that time is running out to make progress on Brexit and urge the Prime Minister to put replicating the customs union at the top of the trade agenda. “This is a time – we believe – for revisiting some of the red lines,” Ms Fairbairn told Sky News. “If there is one thing business knows about, it’s about negotiations and it’s…

Hundreds of thousands of workers will stay off work without pay for a third day after a late-night vote to end a US government shutdown was pushed back. The Senate will now vote on stop-gap funding at 12pm (5pm UK time) on Monday. The measure would pave the way to get the federal government fully up and running again until 8 February. The main stumbling block in agreeing a deal is immigration and the DACA programme to protect from deportation the so-called “Dreamers” – 700,000 immigrants who arrived illegally in the US as children. President Donald Trump said in September…
